In contrast to his flashy purple outfit, the others wore black, their hands falling to their blasters as they circled the clearing. Guards, a whole troop of six. Even if I weren’t still locked together with my mate, we’d be hard pressed to take so many.

“I keep forgetting to ask you if you can shoot,” I murmured in her ear.

“Yes, but I’m better with a blade.” She reached over to grab her pants, her hand sliding into the pocket that held the knife.

“I have no doubt.” My hand closed over hers. “But we’re too outnumbered. Don’t give them any excuse to hurt you.”

She dropped the pants but kept the knife, her lips pressed together in a defiant line.

“We’ll find a way out of this,” I whispered. My eyes met my mother’s, which burned with ire, and I raised my voice, echoing her words. “You dare to disrupt a mate bonding?”

“Be glad we don’t kill you where you sit, banished,” Glovar spat. But his eyes were latched onto Vivv instead of me. He looked like he wanted to dissect her.

“You won’t touch a hair on either of their heads, or the entire world will know about your illegal facility, Glovar,” Mother said.

A fierce protectiveness swelled in my chest. This was the person who’d ordered my mate held captive? Who’d let that guard mistreat her? Frek! I’d gotten her out just in time, if his look was anything to go by. Who knew what they’d been about to do to her!

I wrapped my hands under Vivv’s ass, holding the fabric to her, and climbed to my feet. I cared little that I was bare. I refused to remain seated with this frekker looming over us as if we were lesser.

“Why did you keep her prisoner? What were you trying to do?”

“You should be thanking me instead of questioning me. I was doing it for the likes of you.”

I sincerely doubted it.

“The Grug promised this female was biologically compatible with Zaarn but had no built-in preponderance for birthing mostly females. We were studying her to try to find something we could use to change things on Zaarn so we can grow our population.”

“So you can claim a colony and gain more political power, you mean,” Mother said.

Glovar shrugged. “That would be good for all Zaarn.”

I ground my teeth together, hating that he had a point.

Then he added, “And if we couldn’t learn anything useful for how to change Zaarn biology, the other option was to use her kind to breed a new kind of Zaarn female. One who gives birth to an even mix of males and females. Even allowing for the five percent of births that are nonbinary or trans, we could still increase the amount of female Zaarn significantly in only twenty years.”

“Oh, hell no!” Vivv screeched in my ear as the rasp of a blade pulled free of its sheath rang through the clearing.

All six guards pulled their blasters and aimed them straight at us.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Vivian

My hand trembled slightly, so I tightened it around the knife’s hilt. “No way you fuckers are going to turn me into a medical breeding experiment!”

Instead of a normal response, the head asshole sneered. “You’d think it was trying to talk.”

“Sheistalking,” Devalia said, looking at Wrin. “We need that translator chip update.”

“It’s on my comp.” He tipped his head toward his pants, which still lay crumpled on the ground.

Shit! I forgot the others couldn’t understand me.

My legs tightened around Wrin’s waist—hisnakedwaist. He’d made sure I was covered but hadn’t bothered to do the same for himself. His knot moved inside me, still filling me with the most satisfying fullness I’d ever felt. He’d been so right when he’d said this moment was special.

Too special to be sharing it with fuckers like these. I raised the knife, baring my teeth. I might not have fangs, but I still had bite.

Wrin’s mother picked up his phone and turned to Glovar, “There’s an update for your translator chips that will allow you to understand her.”
