My heart skipped at the ferocity of his promise, but it wasn’t me I worried about.

A loosening within me. I barely felt Wrin’s cock slide free, too overwhelmed by the presence thrumming in my chest, filling me with him in a whole different way.

“Our mate bond is complete.” Wrin brushed his fingers over my forehead, his voice filled with a reverence that tugged on my heart. “You are mine, and I am yours. Forever.”

We hadn’t known each other long, yet it felt as if we’d already gone through a lifetime of experience together. Adversity brought out a person’s truest nature, and Wrin had been steady and true and so damnedcapableit took my breath away.

I wouldnotlose him now. I refused. Determination filled me as I met his gaze. “Let’s go win that forever.”

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Wrin

I’d never felt prouder in my life than to have Vivv march into the yard at my side, every muscle of her small body poised and ready to fight.

To fight forme.

Sunlight slanted into the clearing from the rising sun, warming the cool morning air. The song of stevroe birds surrounded us, the natural world oblivious to the drama unfolding in front of the cabin.

Four of the guards were in view, spread across the yard, which meant two were hidden in the trees somewhere.

“You must be starving.” Mother emerged from inside with a tray covered in meat and vegetable rolls and cans of jormint tea.

Glovar glared from beside the cabin’s front door, and I wanted to laugh. Mother clearly hadn’t invited him inside, and resentment painted every line of his body.

“There’s a doctor on the way. Glovar only trusted his person to confirm the mate bond,” she whispered as she handed Vivv food.

My mate bit into her roll with a fierceness I admired. The mating heat had taken a lot out of both of us, and she was so much smaller that her body didn’t carry the same reserves mine did.

The rich smell of the krinar steak teased my nose, and my stomach gave a loud growl. I ate quickly, finishing two of the rolls before reaching for a third.

The whine of an engine carried on the morning breeze, and a flyer appeared over the trees. It sat down in the cleared landing area in front of the shed, a single occupant inside.

Vivv stiffened at my side. “Oh, hell no!”

The glass canopy rose, and the female who stepped out was the one I’d stunned back at the facility.

“That’s the doctor who experimented on me,” Vivv said, her eyes flashing fire.

My mother whirled on Glovar. “You dare bring her in to do this?”

“Doctor Slev is the foremost expert on this type of alien on all of Zaar,” he said. “Who better?”

Slev stared at my mate with utter fascination. But it wasn’t a kind look. This female looked like she wanted to cut Vivv open and see how she worked. “You say the alien can talk?”

My fists balled as I stepped between her and Vivv. “If you lay a single finger on her, I will chop it off.” Then I snapped my teeth together with a clack and bared my fangs. “Or bite it off. I’m not picky.”

“That’s if I don’t get her first,” Vivv said, moving to my side, her eyes promising violence.

That’s my hellcat.

The doctor opened her mouth, but my mother cut her off. “Just get on with it,” she snapped, her voice ringing with authority.

“Yes, Senator.” The doctor turned back to the flyer and pulled out a large medical scanner. The boxy device was far more powerful than the handheld versions, with a computer screen set into the top face.

Glovar hovered beside Slev as she waved the medical scanner’s wand over us. She did it again and again, frowning down at the display.

With every second that passed, Vivv grew tenser beside me. My own unease grew as well. We were mate bonded—I knew it. The Goddess had blessed me with the most perfect fated mate, and no device could convince me otherwise.
