They all turned to me in surprise.

“What?” I gave a quick shrug. “We were sent out to build a colony from scratch. We’re provisioned with the tools to do it.” My people needed to be an active participant and considered important in this new world.

“So we have options,” Wrin said.

Everyone nodded.

The meeting broke up not long after, with the promise to continue where we left off after we arrived in the morning.

As soon as Devalia left us alone, Wrin said, “Don’t offer the Hyoo-mon supplies without getting a lot of concessions in return.”

“I was trying to prove that humans can pull their weight. That we’re a valuable member of the team.”

“And I respect that.” Admiration filled his tone. “But Senator Bila is the one who kept your mining engineer as a pet, even though she recognized Zo-Fee was sentient. Just because the lizard’s playing nice now doesn’t mean you can trust her.”

“She didwhat?” My voice hit a high note of indignation as anger bloomed in my chest.

“These are cutthroat politicians, even the nicer ones. You should get everything you can out of them while you can, because they won’t offer another chance.”

“Humans need to build a future here. I have to find us a home.” All those women still frozen… all their lives my responsibility.

“You’ll always have a home with me.”

“On Zaar?” I asked.

“On theDaredevil.”

God, how tempting! I’d wanted to captainARK 1because of the adventure and the chance to help create humanity’s new home. But the thought of being grounded for life in an administrative role… it really wasn’t me. I’d always planned to turn running the colony over to someone better suited.

But I couldn’t abandon my crew.

“I need a home for every woman onARK 1. Can you offer me that?”

His lips pressed together in a thin line, and he shook his head, the motion madeextraby all the horns. “TheDaredevilcould take another fifty, but not a thousand.”

“That wasn’t fair. I’m sorry.” I put a hand on his forearm, giving it a squeeze. “You’ve done so much for us already.”

I jumped up to pace back and forth beside the table. “It’s frustration, not you.” I threw out an arm. “I need to be out there, doingsomething, finding that new world.” Part of that need was to help my crew, and part… part was pure selfishness.

Solving this problem would mean I could start to live my own life, too. A life with Wrin.

When I left Earth, it was to start a strange new colony with a bunch of women, who’d all be knocked up with turkey basters to raise a new generation of humans. I’d envied the gay and bi members of the crew, knowing they’d have a chance at finding love and sex. The only love in my life would be the love of good friends and the love for my mandated two children.

I’d expected to use a vibrator alot.

And now? Now I was mated or married or whatever you called it to analien. A gorgeous alien with a vibrating tail. It reached for me as I walked by him, sliding across my back.

Well, at least I was right about one thing. I’ll definitely be using a vibrator a lot. Just one with a mind of its own.

I bit back a chuckle even as my body gave a pulse of need.

Wrin stood and stepped into my path, his eyes glittering with amusement and admiration. “My little hellcat. The Grug won’t know what hit them.”

My breath caught in my throat. I’d never had a guy be like this before. The few men I’d dated on Earth had either brushed off my accomplishments or had worked hard to constantly one-up me.

This support from Wrin meant the world to me. He saw my strength and drive and admired it, praised it even.

I’d done the mate bonding to save his life and get us out of a tough situation. I’d also liked Wrin.
