sweet tooth

Lost in thought, Jillian sat at the table in her living room, staring at the bouquet of flowers in the center.

She hadn’t had problems falling asleep the night before, but unfortunately she hadn’t managed to sleep much. She had woken up early in the morning and in a moment of lucidity, her mind had drifted back to her encounter with the demon. After that, her mind refused to fall back asleep.

Jillian felt extremely guilty for misjudging Lyle, and she felt even worse because she sensed there was something worrying xem, but she had no idea how to help. Lyle didn’t look like xe would accept her help to begin with, and if she actually thought about it, it wasn’t even her place to worry. They were strangers. Xe was a demon she had summoned for a specific purpose. They were business partners, at most.

She had almost convinced herself to stop worrying, when the thought of xyr big blue eyes hit her once more. She groaned in frustration, head dropping into her hands.

“Couldn’t you have been one of the mean ones?” She complained under her breath. “Now I can’t get you out of my head.”

She had to distract herself, so she went on a short trip to buy some things. Despite charming her appearance to make herself look completely different, she still made sure not to return to her town, choosing a small village outside of the woods instead. She bought some food to stock up, as well as herbs and plants she guessed would come in handy with crafts and gardening she planned to keep busy with. Jillian killed time outside and spent almost all the money she had brought with her, buying so many things she needed a cart to bring them all back.

Once home, she put aside the new seeds and potted plants and took some wild fruits from the nearby bushes. After picking up a cookbook from the library, she flicked through the pages as she walked to the kitchen, torn on what she could prepare. In the end, Jillian decided on making a wild berry crumb cake.

When she was a kid, she used to cook and bake plenty with her grandma, but after Jillian had been left alone, she stopped baking desserts altogether. Plus, after she had moved out, Jillian had barely been able to cook proper meals for herself to begin with, let alone sweets. Now that she had the time, she wanted to start baking again, but her knowledge and confidence in the kitchen had faded after years without practice.

Jillian followed the recipe step by step, checking every instruction multiple times. After way longer than planned—the kitchen almost entirely covered in flour—she put the cake into the old oven. She used the baking time to clean the kitchen and cook herself a quick meal for dinner, but with the sweet smell of the cake spreading throughout her whole house, all she could think about was her dessert.

When she took the cake out of the oven, she placed it near the open window to cool down faster. Despite having just eaten, her hunger grew as she looked at her dessert. The cake looked similar to the illustration in the book, so Jillian hoped it would taste just as good.

“You baked?”

Jillian jumped at the voice and turned to find Lyle leaning against the door frame, arms crossed.

“Do you not own clothes?” Is the first thing that came out of her mouth, a mix of surprise and embarrassment in her voice. In her defense, xe had caught her off guard…

Lyle smirked. “I’m here for a purpose. Clothes would get in the way.” Xe looked down at her body. “Why areyounot naked?”

“Because I was eating,” she replied defensively. Then, more quietly, “and I did not realize it was that late already.”

Xe moved from the door and walked closer to her, peeking curiously at the cake. “It looks good.”

“How does this demon thing work?” Jillian asked. “Do you have to feed? What do you eat?”

Lyle shrugged. “I can eat what humans eat, but I don’t have to feed because I don’t need it to exist. I’m a sex demon. I was created for this sole purpose, so sex is quite literally my way of staying alive.” Xe must have seen something weird in her expression, because xe continued. “I’m free to choose where to go and which calls to answer when someone summons us, but if I stop having sex for a long period of time, I will cease to exist because I’m not fulfilling my purpose anymore.”

Jillian grimaced. It wasn’t fair that xe didn’t really have the right to stop if xe wanted to.

Noticing xem still looking at the cake, she grabbed the pan and closed the window. “Do you want a slice?”

Lyle glanced at her, unsure. “You’re not going to poison me, are you?”

A laugh escaped her before she even realized. “I might not be a good cook, but I don’t think I’mthatbad.”

Xyr lips tugged upwards a little. “I’ll risk it, then.”

Jillian carefully transferred the cake from the pan to a plate, then cut two slices and handed one to the demon. She carefully watched xem, waiting for Lyle to taste it before she tried herself. Discarding the little fork entirely, xe picked up the slice between xyr fingers and studied it slowly and attentively, knowing xe was taunting her. Jillian held her breath as xe finally took a bite.

“How… how is it?” She asked carefully.

Xe chewed slowly, dragging the moment as long as xe could.

“How is it?” She asked again, a little loud, impatient.

Lyle smiled slightly. “Not bad.”

Not trusting xyr words, she finally took a bite for herself and almost moaned at the taste. “What do you mean ‘not bad’?” She asked xem accusingly. “This is freaking good.”
