Daylight is doing us no favors, but the thick forestry is on our side, even without the greenery.

In the distance, the rough rumble of an engine gains on us, and I turn to see a white cargo van barreling toward the vehicle we just left.

“Move!” I say again, nudging Evelina forward as Dom heads out in front, his weapon drawn just to be prepared if someone notices us.

We move quietly. There’s a light dusting of snow under our feet, allowing for a smidge of extra padding as we step quickly toward the red dot. Dom is still holding the phone, using it as a guide. Just as we slip behind a few wide trees, Enzo’s vehicle comes into view.

“That’s him,” Evelina says, hitting her shoulder against mine.

As if I don’t know the type of vehicle her husband drives. The man is my enemy. I know fucking everything about him.

Almost everything.

Because what I see next shakes even me to my very fucking core.

And that’s a tough feat in my line of work.

The white cargo van slides to a stop on the icy pavement just as Enzo comes back around from looking under his popped hood. Dom snaps a few photos on Evelina’s phone as she looks on in horror. Three men jump out of the van and yank two women out of the back of Enzo’s car.

“Niccolò,” she urges, but my eyes are on the women as the men shove them into the back of the van and slam the doors closed.

In seconds, both the van and Enzo are pulling away, and I yank my weapon from my pants as I run up from the woods onto the pavement, shooting to no fucking avail.

“Niccolò!” Evelina screams, but I’m not in her world anymore.

I continue firing round after round as Dom comes up behind me. I’m too fucking late to even make contact with the vehicles.

“Fuck!” I scream as I look at Evelina and Dom. “Evelina, you’ll have to find your own fucking way. Dominic, let’s fucking drive.”

She yells obscenities at me, but I don’t have time to watch her pretty fucking mouth tell me what a piece of shit I am.

Not right now.

Dom and I run as fucking fast as we can back toward the rental car, leaving Evelina to fend for herself. In this moment, I don’t even give a fuck. Dom threw her phone at her—she can make a call.

We’ll have to hope we can catch up to the fuckers since we won’t be able to track them without her cell. Evelina will have to figure her own shit out because this became much bigger than the two of us. Bigger than my obsession with the unattainable. My fucking undying desire to touch what’s not mine.

You ruin beautiful things.

I need to move, and I need to move now, and Evelina will end up collateral fucking damage if she comes along for the ride.

I swear under my breath as I run away from her, fear and adrenaline running rampant through my veins because I need to catch that white goddamn van.

And after that, I need to find that piece of shit.

Enzo fucking Greco.

Because the delivery in question? That was my fucking sister.

EVELINA

TWELVE HOURS LATER…

A commotion causes me to stir from a half-ass slumber as an enforcer bursts into the room.

This has to be a fucking nightmare…
