The men talk amongst each other as I do my best to stay resilient. If I can just get Roxy to get my phone from the house so I can show Romeo the photos…maybe he’ll believe I was trying to catch him.
Or maybe he’ll just think I was at the scene taking fucking pictures.

“Evelina, we’re going to hold you here as our captive.” Romeo speaks the words, but they barely register as shock washes over my entire body.Captive. “That is my decision.”
There’s pain on his face, but his actions show no remorse.
I shake my head as my body is racked with sobs, and Romeo walks out of the room.
I am so fucked.

FOUR MONTHS LATER…
I guide Dante and Giana through the hallway until we get to G’s old room, which has remained untouched since she left. I’ve been working with the two of them over the past four months. So much has fucking changed since my sister’s kidnapping and the subsequent fallout after Enzo’s antics.
Dante gave me the run down about Evelina. Romeo DeSantis and his men had planned to hold Evelina until they could get to the bottom of Enzo’s betrayal and be sure Evelina truly had no part in it, but Gabriel got to her first. Enzo had been working with a few of the DeSantis soldiers, training them to be greedy little rats just like him. When Romeo instructed those men to bring Evelina to a safe room inhishome, they instead brought her to Gabriel. They’d been instructed by Enzo to do so if anything happened to him. Apparently, he thought Gabriel would take pity on Evelina—which shows me he never knew Gabriel Amato at all.
Evelina has been missing ever since.
Gabriel has gloated about it several times. The strange thing, though? He never boasted about killing her. Never once mentioned handing her over to The Blood Syndicate in exchange for his own freedom.
And that tells me something.
Evelina is alive.
I think I know where she’s at, too. I’ve cleared four of Gabriel’s seven safe houses. There’s one he doesn’t know I’m aware exists, and I’ve only recently found out about it. The issue is he has a hired security company of ex-Navy Seals guarding the property twenty-four seven.
I’m going to get the DeSantis men to breach the property with me. I just need to come up with a foolproof plan and have something for them in exchange for their help.
She has to be in there because I know he hasn’t turned her over to The Blood Syndicate yet. If he did, he wouldn’t be lying so low at the house and sneaking off to Costa Rica in the middle of the night with a fleet of his own guards.
Evelina has something he wants.
I know how his brain works.
He’s going to get whatever it is that he wants from her and then turn her over in hopes they’ll forgive him for my sister going rogue.
Politics of the underworld are fucked.
Gabriel is too afraid to approach the syndicate, but I know he’s keeping her somewhere for when they come for him. Evelina is his trump card, his ace, and he’s just biding his time until he can use her. He views her as his pretty little trophy, and I remember him saying something similar to Enzo all those months ago.
While Gabriel’s busy killing time, I’ve vowed to whatever type of fucking god there is that I will get her back. But in order to do that, I’ve had to continue playing his game. The only silver fucking lining I keep reminding myself of? The fact that I will take Gabriel Amato down. I will fucking gut him like the insufferable piece of shit he is.
And then I’ll burn everything he’s worked for down right in front of his face as he watches.
Working with Dante DeSantis is the first step in that task—making friends with Gabriel’s enemy and getting the DeSantis family on my side is going to prove beneficial when everything goes up in flames.
And I can’t say it’s been all that bad.
The DeSantis men are nothing like Gabriel has painted them to be my entire life. They do things by the book, and they get ahead for doing so. As opposed to us, the Amatos, who are always killing in the name of narrowly scraping by.
