Where the fuck are we?

Two men throw me to the floor, and I land hard on my ass, thankfully not my stomach. The only thing I’ve thought about since Niccolò and I walked into the hotel room was how I could protect my baby from these disgusting, vile men who won’t seem to let up.

It’s strange how unattached I was making myself, how I was acting like this little human being growing inside of me meant nothing and denying he or she even existed…

But now?

Now I can’t imagine not keeping this baby safe.

One of the men bends down and cuffs me to a mechanism in the floor, twisting my arms behind my back again. This time, the clunky metal scratches at my wrists in a way I know can’t possibly be sterile.

“Where am I?” I ask, figuring I probably won’t get an answer, and I don’t.

Not right away, but then, after one of the men who has been on me since we left the hotel walks away, the other bends down to my eye level.

His eyes are way too kind to be part of this madness.

Blues and grays swirl together as he lets out a deep breath and glances from side to side.

“Evelina, my name is Jeffrey. I am going to get you out of here, but you need to do exactly as I say, or neither of us will make it off this property.”

His words are rushed and deep and low, and I can’t even make sense of them.

“Look,” he continues. “I can’t explain everything right now, but it is vital that you understand that you need to do every single thing asked of you. Do not talk back. Do not refuse. Do not try to be tough or a badass or act any fucking way that could jeopardize what I’m going to do for you.” He nods, and I follow suit, unable to even form words. “Fly under the radar. Blend in. You have how many months until you give birth?”

How does he even know I’m pregnant?

I’m still barely showing.

“Four or five, I guess,” I tell him, thinking back to what Dr. Robles said when she did her exam. “How do you know I’m pregnant? Don’t tell them, please,” I practically beg as I choke out the words quietly.

I don’t want them to know about my baby.

He shakes his head as something sounds in the distance.

“They already know, Evelina. Gabriel wants your baby. You are here because Enzo agreed to get you pregnant and hand the baby over to Gabriel in some type of exchange. I don’t know everything but I do know Gabriel believes this baby belongs to him and he already has a buyer. Please remember what I said. Do your best to not talk back. Do not give them a reason to hurt you.” He stands. “I’ll be in touch. I’ll see you soon.”

Just as he goes to walk away, I ask quickly, “Where are we, Jeffrey?”

I look around at the narrow hallway I’m in, the dim, barely there lights hardly illuminating him as he starts to move away from me but stoops back down.

A cold, damp feeling lingers in the air as he says, “We’re at Gabriel Amato’s breeding facility.”

Bile makes its way up my esophagus, and I have to force it back down as my body heats, anxiety grabbing at my throat and squeezing. Dizziness consumes me while small black dots dance in the corners of my vision.

A breeding facility?

Two people round the corner up ahead, and Jeffrey quickly stands.

“She says she’s hungry. I’ll go get one of the kitchen staff to make her something. Hasn’t eaten for a while, and she looks too skinny.” Jeffrey’s voice shifts, his tone darkening as he talks to the two men who are dressed similarly to him.

They’ve all got on some type of uniform. The two who walk toward me are in dark-brown pants and button-down shirts. They each wear protective vests and have guns slung at their sides.

“Fucking bitch was probably starving herself to get rid of it,” one of the men who walks toward me says.

Fuck you, I think as they each come to stand by me.

Jeffrey disappears around the same corner they just came from.
