“We did it, baby,” I whisper to no one but us.

Then I finally shut my eyes, and the world darkens.

NICCOLÒ

Incessant beeping stirs me from what feels like a deep, soundless sleep. My body fucking aches, cramping from head to toe as I twist to try to get comfortable.

“I think he’s waking up,” she says.

Her sweet fucking voice causes a chill to roll through my body, and I snap my eyes open. I’m immediately greeted by my viper’s face.

“Niccolò,” she says, and my name on her tongue sounds like fucking heaven, but my body feels like goddamn hell.

What the fuck happened?

“Hey,” I say, my throat sore. I look around as I try to find the source of the beeping, and I see that I’m hooked up to some kind of machine. “What’s going on?”

My brain is fuzzy, and I struggle to grasp any reason why I’d be hooked up to a machine. I survey the area and realize we’re in my private jet. We must be on the way back from New York, but something is really fucking wrong.

“What happened?” I ask.

There’s no way this was the doing of the Fiores. I’m grasping at straws here while my head spins. Fuck. My stomach clenches and then rolls, and I proceed to throw up all over myself.

“It’s okay. You need to rest,” Evelina says, coming toward me. She glances at someone else. “Get me a wet cloth and a garbage can?” “Just relax, Niccolò. Your pulse is skyrocketing. Rebecca, what do we do? Can he take anything to calm down?”

Who the fuck is Rebecca?

“Niccolò, Rebecca is a nurse, and she’s going to be with us until we get back to Chicago.”

“What’s going on, viper?” I ask, rubbing at my temples. “Somebody better start talking because shit isn’t adding up.”

My veins light on fire as a foreign feeling creeps up my spine. Why the hell am I so on edge? I try to take a deep breath, but it doesn’t work. Nothing is fucking working.

“I’ll explain everything later,” she says as a woman I’ve never seen comes over and looks at the machine I’m hooked up to. “But we’re okay. You’re okay. Everything is going to be fine, but you might be a bit foggy for a while. I’ll be here. Iamhere.” She smiles at me as she reaches out to stroke my cheek. “Rest, okay?”

I pull at this cord tying me down, yanking it hard until it breaks free from the machine and I can move my fucking limbs.

“What the fuck is happening?” I ask again, unable to control my anger as it bubbles up to the surface and threatens to consume me. “Evelina!”

She grips my hand.

“You might want to go sit over there for a bit,” a voice I don’t recognize says.

I look over to the origin of it, and there’s someone else I’ve never seen.

“He’s going to be agitated until we can get him fully withdrawn from the drugs.”

“The fucking drugs?” I ask. “Don’t fucking tell my woman where to sit.”

I turn back toward Evelina, and she tilts her head to the side.

“What drugs? What are they talking about, and why am I going to be foggy?” I grit the words out as my legs start to feel like I need to move them, like there are little bugs jumping around inside of them. “Ev,” I say, doing my best to stay calm, but it feels like I’m about to jump out of my fucking skin.

“What’s the last thing you remember?” she asks, narrowing her eyes as she squeezes my hand. “Can you try to think about it?”

“I really think we should just wait to start with the que—”
