My phone rings in my pocket, so I shove my hand in and cringe at the name on the screen. It’s Danica.Fuck. She has shit for me to do. I should have been in the office yesterday, but I didn’t show up.

“I’m headed to the office right now,” I state before I even greet her. “I fucking forgot.”

She laughs softly, as she always does when I cuss in her presence. Likely, it’s nerves and nothing more. I try not to be too harsh in front of her, but she does deal with a lot of work transactions, and shit seems to fly when deals are going down.

“You have a meeting at eight sharp to sign some documents for a sale. The rest of your day is free, although I know that you’d mentioned some paperwork you wished for me to write up so you could review it, but you didn’t send me the information.”

Fuck.

“I’m sorry. With the wedding and everything, I’ve dropped the ball. I’ll be in at eight. I have another meeting at nine with my father, but after that, I’ll be in the rest of the day.”

“See you then.”

Ending the call, I let out a grunt. Without a second thought, I find the name of one of my cousins. I’m not sure if I can even trust him, but this will be a good way for him to earn my trust back.

“Junior,” I call out as soon as I hear his groggyhello.

“Coleman?”

Without confirming, mainly because he knows who the fuck I am, I clear my throat, then begin to speak.

“I need you to come to my place in an hour. I have to go into the office, and I don’t want to leave my wife alone without some kind of protection.”

There is silence for a long moment. I can tell he doesn’t quite believe me. Maybe he thinks it’s a trick, but it’s not. It’s more along the lines of a test. Something that I probably shouldn’t do with my wife, but what he may not know is that I have cameras all over this fucking place—he farts, and I’ll know it. He should know that I’ll have cameras. I’m a manager, soon to be an executive in the family.

Security is important.

“I’ll be there,” he announces. “And, Coleman?”

I don’t say anything immediately. Instead, I wait, knowing he’s going to continue. “I had nothing to do with Keen and Aaron’s plans. Nothing. I know I said that once, but I want to make it clear. The family is everything to me. I take my vow, my promise, seriously.”

His words are good, and at any other time, I would believe them without question. This time, however, I need the proof.

“You have taken your vow. You are part of the family, and you always will be, Junior. I trust you until you are no longer worthy of that trust.”

“I appreciate that,” he murmurs. “See you in an hour.”

Ending the call, I clear my throat, turn my back to the skyline, head straight toward the clear door and reach for the handle. There is movement in the condo. Normally, I would find a gun or something because there would never be anyone in my place, but I know it’s Claire.

She appears in front of the door, wearing nothing except my shirt as she stands with her long legs bare in front of me. Her hair is a fucking mess, and she’s got not an ounce of makeup on her face. This is her, the raw version of her that I probably wouldn’t have even seen for at least a year, but after the past twenty-four hours, we’ve lived about a lifetime together already.

“Hey, hummingbird,” I murmur as I step through the door and close it behind me.

“What are you doing awake?”

Her voice is raspy and sexy, and her eyes search mine as she waits for an answer, and even though my balls are empty and my cock aches, I want to fuck her again.

Right here.

Right now.

“I have to go into the office. I have two meetings this morning,” I admit.

She frowns. Her gaze flicks to her feet, then slowly lifts to meet mine. Her lips twitch into a small smile, and she nods her head once. I watch as her tongue peeks out and she tastes her bottom lip before she opens her mouth to say something, but I don’t let her speak.

“My cousin Junior is going to be staying with you. He’s your protection. You go nowhere without him. In fact, don’t leave the condo. You can sleep all day if you want, don’t give a fuck, but stay here. You’ll be safe.”

I don’t know if I’m telling her or talking myself into the fact that she’ll be safe. Not just protected but safe. I’m not sure, but it doesn’t matter. Clearing my throat, I sink my teeth into my bottom lip and let out a sigh as I lift my hand and cup her cheek.
