“We’ll wait, then. No. I have the phone. Bye.”

The bye sounds like a grinding sound as his teeth gnash together. I think about asking him if everything is okay but then decide against it. He would tell me if I needed to know whatever the hell was said on the other end of the phone. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to know.

He shifts his attention back down to his phone. “Bring her to Coleman’s and Aunt Brenda, too. Hendrick’s orders.”

My mouth goes dry. There’s no way that Hendrick said to bring them here and put us all in one place, in one condo. “That makes us sitting ducks,” I shout as soon as he ends the call and shoves his phone back into his pocket.

Junior lifts his gaze, his eyes connecting to mine. He arches a brow as his lips curve up into a grin. “Yeah, it does.”

Oh.

My. God.

“Junior,” I whisper.

He lets out a laugh. He spent hours with me today. Made me believe that he had nothing to do with whatever his brother was doing to Henry, Coleman, Wells, and Hendrick. I don’t even know myself, and I sure as shit don’t know why he’s got me and the other women targeted here.

“Did you really think I was just going to take my father, mother, and brother being murdered lying down? I may be the family, and I may have been loyal to the family at one point, but that ended when they ended my parents for no fucking good reason.”

He’s ranting, and then he begins to pace. I don’t know what to do. What he’s capable of. And I also have no idea what he’s talking about. Instead of asking him, I stare at him, pressing my lips together and wondering how the hell I’m going to get away from him.

“My youngest brother is the one who called you. Nobody suspects him of shit because he is low ranking and a fucking idiot, but he’ll do what I say.”

He leans forward, his gaze holding mine. I can’t move. I am frozen in fear as I hold my breath and wait for him to say something. As I hope for a way out of this. But judging by the anger that is working behind his eyes, I am stuck right here.

“Now,” he rasps, “sit your ass right there and wait for the other bitches to arrive. It’s going to be great fun. Rest up.”

ChapterThirty-Two

COLEMAN

A second whiskeyis placed in my hand at the same time my father makes his way up to me. I can tell he’s been drinking, his body swaying with each step he takes. Then he stops beside me, lifting his hand and clapping it down on my shoulder, his fingers squeezing before he gives me a shake.

“Proud of you, Coleman. A married man, an executive. I have one last surprise for you,” he says, his voice slurring with his words.

I arch a brow and grin as I look at him. “Yeah?” I ask.

He chuckles. Then he slips his hand inside his tailored jacket pocket and pulls out an envelope. Holding out my hand, he slaps the envelope into my palm. There is a weight I don’t expect. I look down and frown before I lift my head back up and my eyes meet his.

“What’s this?” I ask.

He laughs, hearty and all-consuming. I can’t remember the last time I saw him so calm, at ease, and almost carefree. His lips are curved up into a smile so big that you would think he just won the fucking lottery.

“This is a welcome to the executive club, plus a wedding gift.”

I open the envelope and peer inside to see a set of keys and a thick stack of papers. I open my mouth to ask him what they are but then realize he won’t tell me. Reaching my hand into the envelope, I take the thick stack out and focus on the words in front of me.

They blur almost immediately.

“A house,” I whisper.

“A house,” he confirms. “Happy wedding. Happy promotion.” I scan the document. I can’t believe what I’m fucking reading. “Look at the last page.”

I flip to the last page, and that is where I see a photograph. It’s a listing flyer. It’s a picture of the outside of a house. A house that my father bought for me, for my family. It’s a fucking mansion, is what it is. It’s huge, just as big as his place, if not bigger.

“But is there a pool the shape of Texas in the backyard?” I ask.

He laughs. “No, but there is a fifty-meter pool in case you want to raise an Olympian.”
