“He’s dead. Or nearly. His soul is separating from his body.”

“Bring him back,” I demanded.

“You know not what you ask,” the priestess snapped.

“I do know. His spirit wants it. His son will need him. Bring him back.”

“I don’t know if I can.”

“Try.”

VINKETTIN

Four years later

The sun shifted between the trees like the first time I saw him. The world had changed, and we’d suffered, but I’d never regret how we started or how he’d looked at me that first day.

A part of me wished we had more time or an easier time. But I knew deep down in my bones that if things had gone differently, none of us would be the same people. Our love wouldn’t have been what it was if it was easy.

I often came back to this spot to remember him. To spend a moment with the memory.

But the memory written in the early morning mist rippled and broke as a dark-haired boy ran through the tall grass. It nearly swallowed him. Only the tips of his wild hair were visible as they ruffled in the wind. But his squeals of joy disturbed the newly awakening forest.

New life for the spring.

“Vinnnnnnnnn.” He screamed, running a circle around me so quickly my gaze couldn’t keep up.“SAVE ME.”

“There is no saving you.” I laughed, picking up on the figure streaking across the field to collide with the little boy.

Dominic snatched him up in his arms to spin him around. Tyr giggled and bit his shoulder.

Dominic hissed. “No biting! You almost broke skin.”

“They’relove bites,” Tyr shouted, squirming out of Dominic’s arms to run away again.

“You don’t seem to mind biting when I do it,” I said, leaning in to murmur under my breath so Tyr wouldn’t hear.

“Don’t you dare tell him that. He’s already bad enough.”

“His poor mother.” I laughed, slipping my arm around his middle. “I can’t believe he’s already shifting.”

“He’s powerful. A prince among men.”

“With your bloodlines, who is surprised? His mother’s blood has been tied to this land since the old kinds abandoned it.” My fingers slipped under the waistline of his shorts.

The pack feasted as soon as the boy was born with Dominic’s dark eyes and hair and his mother’s looks. He was beautiful. The pack didn’t seem to give a fuck about Dominic mating a man, especially with a perceived powerful heir. The wolves didn’t care how it was done as long as it was done. Progressive of them.

The witches had aided us in cleaning out the full extent of the rot to return the land to the passage. The old vampire lair was long gone, its residents evicted or killed. They wouldn’t be back.

Dominic kissed my shoulder as we walked, semi-keeping up with his boy. It had become our morning routine to walk the baby wolf, who was up with the sun. Since he was a ball of boundless energy, he needed to expend as much as possible. Dominic hadn’t planned to foster the child until he was old enough to shift, but as soon as he saw Tyr, he fell in love.

There was no mistaking it, and since Tyr was a handful, Rayne appreciated the breaks. She was happy he spent so much time with his father.

“Don’t start that.”

“What?” Dominic murmured into my skin.

“You know what.” I laughed, halting our walk to draw his body into mine. My fingers traced the scar on his back, the purple lines spreading like lightning up his tanned skin.
