The corners of Vin’s mouth ticked up. “Are you quoting famous literature at me?”

“Maybe.” I wet my lips with my tongue, itching to taste his smile.

He got to his feet, got in my space, and my hackles raised. Our bodies were made to oppose each other. We’d been bred to be enemies. Would my instincts dull if he became a more permanent fixture in my life? Would we be comfortable with one another?

After the horrors I saw as a child, I can’t imagine ever letting my guard down so completely, but I wanted to for him.

“Are you saying yes?” Vin asked looking into my eyes.

“I don’t know. I’m tired of fighting it.”

“But why now, after you’ve fought it for so long?” His chest filled like he held a breath he didn’t need.

“You’re asking me why when you’re the one who showed up at my cabin demanding we make it work?” All I could do is laugh.

“I didn’t expect you to agree so easily.”

“I’ve sat with the realization that I don’t want there to be a next time. That I don’t want to come back. And the more I allow myself to deny any more life, the more know I need you in this one. I’m tired of fighting it. I’m tired of trying to make my life work without you.”

He pulled me to my feet, and I dropped my face to nuzzle into his neck. Such a normal gesture for a wolf, and I wondered how he’d take it.

“Are you attempting to turn me on?” he asked, letting amusement creep into his expression.

“I tried that. Remember when I showed up on your fucking balcony? I got kicked out.” I set a hand on his hip, rubbing over the line of his Adonis belt. “Bruised ego and all, I don’t think I’ll try again.”

He laughed and brushed his lips over my temple. “Maybe I should turn you down more often. Keep that massive ego of yours in check.”

“My ego is fine, and I already said I’m never trying it again.” I used my nails, lightly scraping over his skin.

He pursed his lips. “Never again?”

"Nope, never. Can’t bear it.” I looked down into Vin’s icy eyes, sneaking my finger under the hem of his shirt, seeking skin and connection.

“Remind me of that when you have my cock down your throat later.”

“Yours down my throat?” I raised a brow. “I would object, but I enjoy blowing you too much to even jest about such things.”

His lips spread, finally giving me the smile I’d been after, exposing his fangs and razor-sharp teeth. Daywalkers drank blood, but while they needed it to survive, it wasn’t their only diet. Unlike vampires, they could consume other foods.

My cock pulsed in response. The ecstasy of the blood exchange was unlike anything I’d experienced before. It was one reason why humans were so drawn to vampires. I equated it, much to Vin’s dislike, to being bitten by a mosquito, but instead of their toxin making their victim itch, it caused intense euphoria. To my detriment, Vin’s bite did the same.

“I know what you’re thinking,” he said in a snarl.

“You couldn’t possibly.” I rocked my hips into his, dropping my gaze to watch the friction between our pants.

“My eyes are up here.” His words were tight, coiled, ready to pounce.

I lifted my gaze, my lips twisting into a smirk, and brought our mouths nearly together, close enough for him to feel my breath as I spoke. “And what lovely eyes they are, but I’m after your teeth.”

He didn’t answer right away. I’d caught him off guard. “Are you giving me permission to bite you, Dominic?”

“You didn’t need permission when you bit my fucking base.”

His eyes fell shut, and he groaned. “Wicked. You are a wicked bastard.”

“Because I know what I want?” I skimmed the back of my knuckles down his chest, abs, and groin, finding his bulge. “I know what you want, too. Maybe you should keep up.”

He snatched my wrist, squeezing until the bones clicked and pain ate its way up my arm. I ground my teeth, trying not to give him the satisfaction of letting him know he got to me.
