His nostrils flared. His eyes darkened. Whether it was out of fury or because hearing his name might have triggered the same reaction it did in her, she wasn’t willing to explore.

‘During our last meeting, you struck me as many things, Miss Parker, but extremely reckless didn’t strike me as one of them.’

Her heart stuttered at his arctic tone.

Giada should probably have dialled down the taunts then. The furious man before her was clearly running out of patience. But for the life of her, she couldn’t back down.

It felt weirdlyinvigoratingthat she’d managed to needle him. Twirling another strand of hair, she smiled. ‘Call it a new skill if you want.’

His head twitched back. Only by a tiny fraction but she could see the sliver of bewilderment in his eyes. As if he could barely believe her audacity.

Giada was marvelling at her gumption when he surged to his feet.

For an age he stared down at her. Every atom of her body was infused with so much electricity, Giada believed she would spontaneously combust.

His gaze slowly raked over her. Once. Twice.

Heat dragged up from her toes and she knew her lips were parted, her breasts straining against the already tight material of her dress. When her tongue dashed out to ease the tingle in her bottom lip, she allowed it.

She told herself it was okay to react this way because her sister had never been shy of embracing her sexuality. Gigi would never feel uncomfortable under such blatant male scrutiny. She would revel in it and give as good as she got.

But while Giada would withstand such a bold, unapologetic stare, she couldn’t bring herself to return the favour. Not when the man in question was so...potent. So overwhelmingly untamed andsexy.

As much as Giada didn’t want to admit it, Alessio Montaldi was an exemplary male specimen. The kind she wasn’t in the habit of fraternising with...ever. The men she usually encountered were scientists who lived and breathed their jobs or benign betas who were friendly enough and nowhere near intimidating.

Alessio Montaldibreathedsuperior alpha male. He was the king of all he surveyed and with every bone in his body he owned it.

But he doesn’t ownyou.

The tiny little but empowering thought raised her chin, sparks of defiance igniting through her as he stared at her.

That defiance took a steep nosedive, however, when in the next moment he bent low and scooped her up.

She yelped as dizziness rushed her and her world turned literally upside down. Before Giada could fathom what was happening, Alessio was striding through the throng of clubbers.

Dear God, he’d tossed her over his shoulder!

‘What the hell do you think—?’

‘If you know what’s good for you, you’ll stop talking right now,’ he growled.

Giada opened her mouth to rip a volley of words at him, but her throat dried up when warm hands landed at the backs of her thighs, sending sizzling showers of heat all through her body.

She knew it was only to keep her from tumbling over his shoulder, but the moan that escaped unbidden from her throat was luckily drowned out by the music and chatter that greeted the spectacle she no doubt made being carried out like a sack of potatoes.

Heat that had nothing to do with her inverted position, and everything to do with her way her breasts were pressed into his back, rushed into her face. The way his muscles rippled beneath her hands when she had no choice but to grab his coat to steady herself pushed her to ignore his warning. ‘Put me down right now!’

‘Are you sure? You seem to enjoy making a spectacle of yourself. I’m only obliging you,’ he drawled, his voice still that infuriatingly steady rumble that burrowed into places she didn’t want to name.

Giada sucked in a breath when he took the stairs that led outside in quick strides, uncaring that he was jostling her against his body. When she reached out to steady herself once more, her hands grabbed the firm hard globes of his ass.

He stiffened, then stopped.

Giada squeezed her eyes shut as mortification erupted through her.

She opened her mouth to say something, anythingto abate the charged atmosphere she’d created. But Alessio was snapping something at the nightclub staff, who were hurrying to respond.

Then he was striding out of the entrance.
