My gut tightened. “He drove you out of your hometown?”

“Not exactly. It had always just been me and my mom. My dad was a bit like Tyler Simmons.” She nodded her head at the house across the street. “Decided he wasn’t cut out for marriage or kids. Then my mom died of cancer a few years ago, and I had no other close family. I’d been thinking about traveling for years. My mom and I always talked about wanting to do it. A big road trip adventure. It felt like my time.”

I decided to do some digging and find out who the fuck this guy was.

And make sure he never came near her again.

“You aren’t going to run a search on my ex,” she said.

Shit. I made a noncommittal noise.

“Colt!”

“Look.” I nodded at the windshield.

Macy swiveled and we watched a man coming out of the house. There was a woman in the doorway, dressed in a silky robe.

Macy gasped. She picked up the file on the center console and flicked it open. “It’s Simmons.”

“Yep.” I watched the man pull away in a white Toyota. “Let’s see where he’s going.”

“And bring him in.” She was almost vibrating with excitement.

“Tomorrow.” When she was safely not here. “It’ll be a bitch to process him now. It’s too late in the day.”

Her shoulders slumped. “Okay.”

“Afterward, I’ll drop you home.”

She nodded. “See, we make a pretty good team.”

I wasn’t a team player. My brothers and Daisy were the only people I let close.

I played better solo.

Now I just needed to remind myself and Macy of that.

Okay, so surveillance was boring, but tailing Tyler Simmons to a crappy motel was more interesting.

The douche had met with another woman and disappeared inside a room. How did a guy with no job, who cheated, and ignored his kids, score with these women?

I liked watching Colt do his job. The man was patient and methodical. I also enjoyed his company, even when he was grumpy.

Actually, I kinda liked the grumpy. He was honest, he didn’t pretend to like something, or pretend to be someone he wasn’t.

He’d dropped me home and grunted out a goodbye. I pulled leftovers out of my fridge, and stuck them in the microwave. After the stakeout, I’d changed into cutoff shorts, and a slouchy T-shirt that slid off my shoulder.

It’d been kind of cute watching Colt try to apologize to me. Not with words, but with his actions. My terrible origami unicorn was sitting on my desk at work. I leaned against my kitchen cabinet. We were attracted to each other. All too clearly, I remembered the feel of his mouth on my breasts, and I whimpered.God. I was slick between my legs, and I let my head drop back.

He’d made it very clear he thought we were a bad idea.

My belly did its best to tie itself in some knots. I hated that phrase. Scott had used it liberally. Usually in reference to any ideas or plans I had.

Ugh, I wasnotthinking of him. Scott Warner had sucked up more of my life than he deserved.
