“That sounds like Scott,” I said.

Vander’s gaze met mine, and my pulse jumped until Colt put a hand on my shoulder. The touch steadied me.

“Scott Warner is not a good guy, Macy,” Vander said.

“I should have seen it sooner.”

“That’s not on you,” Vander said.

I bit my lip and nodded. Colt’s fingers squeezed my shoulder.

“Saxon also talked to a few guys Warner worked with at the gym. Apparently, he talked a lot about his girlfriend. The one he wasn’t going to let get away.”

I pressed a palm to my churning belly. Colt growled, and I reached up with my other hand and put it over his.

“Warner got violent with Macy,” Colt said.

Vander’s face sharpened. “You guys better stop him.”

His tone said that otherwise he would.

“We’re on it, Vander,” Reath said.

Colt squeezed again. “The bastard isn’t getting close to Macy again.”

Vander nodded. “If you need any help, Boone is in town.”

I wondered who Boone was. I figured if he knew Vander and the Fury brothers, he was another badass.

Reath leaned forward. “He’s a long way from his farm in Vermont.”

“He was working a personal protection job for me for a businessman from Shreveport. He’s just finishing up, and has a few days in New Orleans. You’d be doing me a favor if you’d check in with him. Spends most of his time on that farm alone, with only his dog for company.”

Reath smiled. “I seem to remember you used to be a bit of a loner, Vander. Before you fell for your police detective.”

I cocked my head, sensing a story.

Vander made a sound. “My family wouldn’t let me be a loner. My mother is Italian-American, and always up in our business. But yes, having my lovely detective has given me a new perspective.” His lips tipped up.

Wow. I wondered what kind of woman captured the heart of a man like Vander Norcross.

“But Boone doesn’t have family or a woman,” Vander continued. “I’m worried about him, and a few others who served with me.”

“We’ll give Boone a call,” Colt said.

Vander inclined his head. “Thanks. And good luck teaching Warner a lesson.”

Reath touched the keyboard and ended the video call. “

“I’m going to find Warner and stop him.” Colt’s tone was low and dangerous.

I froze. “Stop him meaning put him in jail?”

A muscle ticked in Colt’s jaw. “Meaning whatever it takes.”

I jumped off the stool and grabbed his arms. “But nothing illegal. You have a daughter, big guy, and…and I’m not bringing paperwork to jail for you to sign.”

Reath made an amused sound.
