The door of the gym flew open.

“You okay, man?” A guy in a polo shirt with the gym logo stood there, worry on his face.

I rose, and tucked my handgun back into the holster at the small of my back. “Yeah.”

“I called the cops.”

“Thanks.” I saw worried people crowded in the doorway. “The shooter took off. You’re safe.”

“Jesus.” The gym worker thrust a hand through his hair.

“Have you seen this guy?” I held up my phone with the picture of Warner on it.

The man’s brow creased. “Yeah, he was in here earlier. Asking about memberships. Real blowhard. Kept saying how good he was in the ring. He left, but I saw him hanging around outside for a bit.”

My mouth flattened. The fucker had lured me here. He’d seen me move Macy into my place, and he wasn’t happy about it.

Luckily for me, Warner was a crappy shooter. He was pissed, and he’d lured me here. Why? To scare me? To make a point?

As I headed for my SUV, I saw a piece of paper fluttering under my wiper blade. I stiffened.

I yanked it out and my gut tightened.

It was a picture of Macy sitting at her desk in my office. It had been taken through the front windows. She was leaning one elbow on her desk, smiling, the phone to her ear.

Someone had scrawledMineacross the picture.

I scanned around. Warner had clearly paid the teenager to leave this while he took shots at me. My heart lodged in my throat. I yanked my phone out and hit Reath’s number.

“Colt?”

“Someone took a shot at me outside the gym where Warner was spotted.”

My brother cursed.

“I’m fine. He couldn’t hit a paper bag if he was inside the bag. Left a photo of Macy on my SUV. Her at the office.”

Reath cursed again. “Hang on.”

“Get over there, Reath. He—”

“She’s fine. I have eyes on her on my security feed.”

My racing pulse slowed a notch. “You sure?”

“Looks like she’s singing.”

My head dropped forward. “She does that. A lot.”

“Wait, someone’s headed in. Don’t worry, it’s a woman, not Warner.”

“Okay.” I saw a patrol car pull in. “Cops are here. I’ll give a statement and then head straight back. Watch her for me.”

“You got it, Colt.”
