“Macy?”

I jerked. “Sorry, I’m…”

“Daydreaming.”

“Maybe.”

A slow smile crossed his face. “I think I can guess the topic of your daydream.”

My skin flushed hot, my breasts felt full. How did he do this to me? I lifted my chin. “We need to get to the office.”

He sighed. “We do. I’m going to find Warner today. I’m going to end this.”

Then I wouldn’t be in danger. I wouldn’t need to stay here anymore. It would be safe to go back to my place.

Before I could process that, Colt’s cellphone rang. He pulled it out.

“Fury.” His frown deepened. “Okay.” He waved a hand at me. “Turn on the TV. The news.”

I hurried over and grabbed the remote. The TV flickered to life.

“Breaking news,” a glossy, female reporter said, her face serious. “Notorious rapist Wayne Cullen has escaped from prison—”

I gasped, watching the report. Cullen had cut a trail of terror for single women across most of the South before he’d been caught in New Orleans a few months back. Behind me, I heard the low murmur of Colt’s voice as he talked to whoever was on the phone.

I wrapped my arms around my middle, listening to the long list of victims left by this animal. And he’d gotten free and attacked several young women in a sorority house early this morning.

God. It put my own troubles in perspective. Those poor girls.

“Yeah. Let me call you back.”

I tore my gaze off the TV and looked at Colt. His face was so hard and grim.

“Wayne Cullen escaped.”

“I saw.” I clenched my hands together. “He attacked some girls at a sorority house.”

A muscle ticked in Colt’s jaw. “Yeah. It hasn’t been released yet, but he raped three young women. He beat one of them to death, and put another one in a coma.”

“Oh, God.” Nausea hit me. “They want you to find him?”

One brisk nod.

“Go.”

“I don’t want to leave you. Warner—”

I waved a hand. “This is more important.”

He took a step closer. “Not to me.”

Now my insides were a gooey, sticky mess. “I’ll stay at the office. With one of Reath’s men.”

Colt hesitated.

“This is really important, Colt.” I stabbed a finger at the TV. “You have to stop Cullen before he hurts anyone else.”

Colt closed the distance between us and gripped my shoulders. “You’ll stay in the office.”
