I swallowed. “Yeah.”

“Good. I’m going to ride you hard, Colt, until you can’t think of anything but me.” Her smile faded to a serious look. “I’m going to take care of you.”

That wasn’t how things worked. I took care of people.

But when we reached the bedroom, and Macy pulled that T-shirt off so that she was naked, I stopped thinking. All there was at that moment was Macy.

MACY

Ifinished braiding Daisy’s hair. “What do you think?”

The little girl peered into the mirror, turning her head from side to side. “It’s good.”

The lackluster tone of her voice matched her face. Colt had stayed long enough this morning to give Daisy a morning hug before he’d headed out again.

I rested my hands on her shoulders and squeezed. “It’s hard when your dad’s away.”

Daisy bit her lip and nodded.

“He does important work,” I told her.

She nodded again. “He helps catch bad people.”

“Yes. And keeps good people safe.”

Daisy looked down at her white and pink shoes. “I know, but…”

I toyed with the end of her braid. “But what, sweetheart?”

She looked up. “What if he doesn’t come home? What if he dies? Like my mom did.”

“Oh, baby.” I hugged her. She smelled like apple shampoo. “I know your daddy will do everything he can to ensure he comes home to you. You’re the most important thing in his world.”

She rubbed her cheek on my shirt. “You promise?”

“Yes. And remember what I told you? There is no point focusing on the bad stuff. It’s better to focus on the good. Think of your daddy catching the bad man and being home for dinner. Maybe not tonight, but as soon as he can.”

Daisy nodded and shot me a tremulous smile.

I cupped her cheek. “How about we do something fun tonight? Maybe play some games. Whatever game you want.”

Daisy’s smile widened. “Poker.”

My eyes bugged out of my head. “You can play poker?”

She nodded. “Uncle Kav taught me. We bet using pretzels.”

I guessed I shouldn’t be surprised; this little girl was being raised by the Fury brothers, after all.

“How about we start with Snap, and go from there?”

She beamed at me. “Okay.” She threw her arms around me, hugging me tight. “I’m glad you’re here, Macy. I hope you don’t go away.”

I hugged her back, my throat tight.

Then I waved her and Lola off. Alone, my thoughts turned to Colt.
