Where are you? If I come to you, you have to let her go.

The reply was instantaneous.

I don’t take orders from anyone.

God, he was a piece of work.

If I come, you let her go. A trade.

He waited a bit this time, every second making my nerves stretch tighter. A reply popped up.

Deal.

Okay. This was good. I could free Daisy and get her safe. My hands shook as I typed.

Where are you?

If you share where I am with the bounty hunter, the girl dies, Macy.

My hands shook even more.

Just me. Give me the address, Scott.

The address appeared and I tapped it into the map app on my phone. It wasn’t far away. It looked like it was just a house. I quickly locked up the office and hurried back to the warehouse.

In the garage, my bike gleamed under the lights. I wheeled it out and pedaled off.

Get to Daisy. Get her free. That was all that mattered.

By the time I turned onto the street, my hands were hurting from gripping the handlebars so tightly.

Maybe my mom had been technically right about avoiding entanglements. It meant you avoided pain.

But it also meant you avoided the good stuff too. Happiness, joy, love.

I swallowed the lump in my throat. I loved Daisy. The little girl was sweet and caring, and she didn’t deserve this.

And Colt… My heart thudded. He was grumpy and protective. He’d suffered, but he’d made a good life for himself, and he helped people.

I saw the house. There was a For Sale sign outside.

I parked my bike against the fence and pushed through the gate. The squeak as it opened grated along my nerves.

Daisy. The only thing I could focus on right now was Daisy.

As I neared the front door, it was wrenched open.

I stared at Scott. His scruff was way past needing a shave, and his mouth was a flat line. He looked like he hadn’t been sleeping well.

“Get in here.” He grabbed my arm, his fingers biting into my skin. I bit my lip.

He slammed the door closed behind me. The house was empty, with no furniture. He’d clearly broken in and had been hiding out here. It was probably why Colt and Reath hadn’t been able to find him.

I didn’t see Daisy. My pulse hammered. “Scott, where—?”

“Shut up.” He swung me around and my shoulder hit the wall. Pain spiked across my upper back. “For once, you’ll do as I say.”

I lifted my chin. “Where is Daisy?”
