I stiffened. I expected to see fear or horror. I’d almost just beaten a man to death in front of her. She was trembling, but there was no fear.

When I turned toward her, she launched herself at me.

I caught her, sweeping her off her feet.

“Colt.” As she buried herself against my chest, I breathed that berry scent deep.

“Fuck, Macy. I was so worried I’d be too late.” That I’d fail her.

“I’m safe. I’m so sorry he took Daisy.”

“That wasnotyour fault.” I cupped her cheeks, letting my gaze run over her poor, battered face. There was swelling, and bruises forming. “It’s Warner’s fault. I never blamed you, sunflower. I’m sorry you thought so.”

Her lips trembled. She touched one of my hands. My knuckles were torn and bleeding. “We need to clean these up before Daisy sees the blood.”

I nodded. I liked her looking out for me. “I was an asshole earlier, worried about Daisy, I locked everything in—”

“Because you always shoulder the blame that’s not yours.”

“Maybe.” I gently kissed the unhurt side of her mouth. “Guess I’ve got a lot to learn about being in a relationship. Think you can help me with that?”

She gave me a small smile. “Maybe.”

“You fucking turned my life upside down, Macy Underwood. From the first moment I hired you as my office assistant.”

“Manager.”

My lips quirked. “Manager. Now let’s find Daisy, and get you both checked out.”

As Dr. Hamilton finished probing my cheek, I tried not to wince.

But damn, it hurt.

“Sorry, young lady.” The doctor stepped back. “Thankfully, there’s nothing broken.” There was sympathy in her brown eyes. “You’ll need ice and some painkillers.”

I nodded, and a second later Colt was there with an ice pack. He gently pressed it to my face. I had a few other aches and bruises, but I was alive. That was all that mattered.

Beside me on the couch, Daisy burrowed into my side. She hadn’t left me since Colt had carried me out of that house.

I stroked her hair, knowing she needed the reassurance as much as I did.

And having her there, safe and warm, made me feel better.

Colt wrapped an arm around both of us. His brothers were sitting at the island, except for Reath, who was on the phone. The tall man, Boone, who looked like he should be in a Marvel movie was with them.

“Right.” Dr. Hamilton closed her doctor’s bag. “I’ll send you boys my bill.”

“You’re on retainer,” Reath said.

“Oh yes, that’s right.” The doctor winked at him. “Those of you with ladies, please keep them safe.”

“We will,” Dante said.

“And those of you without ladies need to find one.”
