“That seems… inefficient.”

Ollie chuckled. “You’d be surprised. Besides, I thought you invited me to join you.”

She blinked at him. “What?”What is he talking about?

“Pilates. I thought you said I should join you.”

Ohh… that.“I thought you said no way.”

“A man can change his mind.”

Mia snorted. “Not in my experience, but if you say so.”

Turning his head to grin at her, Ollie said, “Was that sass I just heard? Is Major Mia relaxed enough to throw down some sass?”

“Major Mia is relaxed enough to kick your arse, Bennett.”

Ollie shook his head, feigning disappointment. “You know what I said I’d do if you called me Bennett again, sweetling.” An evil grin spread across his handsome face, and he wiggled his fingers. “Prepare to be tickled.”

Oh shit.“Don’t you fucking dare!”

Heat pack forgotten, Mia leapt to her feet and tried to run, but Ollie and his long damn limbs caught her before she’d even reached the edge of the timber deck and took her to the ground. What ensued once he had his hands on her could only be described as a tickling frenzy.

His hands were everywhere.

Every. Where.

Her ribs, her stomach, her thighs, her back, behind her knees, under her feet, under her arms, on her breasts—

Her shrieks of laughter were cut off by a gasp and a sudden tightness in her belly, a pulsing warmth between her legs. Or maybe that was Ollie. Because Mia was pretty damn sure that was an erection she felt pressed between her thighs. Just like she was sure his breathing had matched hers, heavy and expectant.

Mia swallowed thickly. “Ollie…,” she murmured, then licked her lips.

But he was on his feet and helping her get to hers before her brain could even begin to process what was happening. “Did I hurt you?”

“No, I’m okay,” she said, smiling to hide her disappointment as she straightened her clothes and dusted herself off.

“I should get back to work,” he said, thumbing over his shoulder at the forge as he backed away from her, stumbling a little as he stepped off the edge of the deck. “Do you need anything else before I go?” He seemed to stare at her mouth for a moment before clarifying, “For your… ah… leg?”

She shook her head. “No, I’m good. All stretched out, thanks.”

“Good. That’s… good.” Without another word, he turned away and strode back into the dark of the forge, then kept his back to her as he did whatever the hell it was he did in there. Playing with literal fire.

“Good,” Mia murmured, standing there watching him, rubbing her thigh and wondering what the hell had just happened. “Yep. All good.”

Pain made Mia cranky at the best of times, but the realisation she’d been friend-zoned—again—by the only man she’d ever truly loved had kicked her irritation up a few notches.

And she wasn’t even sure why.

Yeah, she’d loved Oliver Bennett—as an seventeen-year-old kid. Mia had gotten over him a long fucking time ago.

Hadn’t she?

Wasn’t that why she’d agreed to marry someone else, because she was well and truly over Ollie Bennett? Of course, that didn’t explain why she’d broken off that engagement, or why she was even having these reckless thoughts.

It didn’t matter. None of it did. She didn’t come home to hook up with her teenage crush. She came home because…

Because she had nowhere else to go.
