He raised one brow and grinned at her. “Don’t fuck it up?”

“I knew there was a reason I like you, Perkins.”

“Should we synchronise our watches,” he teased.

Mia mirrored his expression. “I’ll synchronise my foot up your arse if you fuck this up.”

“Yes, Ma’am.”

Crispin appeared at her elbow, swinging his car keys around his finger. “You ready to go?”

With one final scan of the yard, she nodded. “Let’s get out of here.”

Mia needed to get ready. More importantly, she needed to check on Ollie. Her man had skulked off earlier than his brothers, claiming he needed more time than them to get ready, something about his hair. She’d grinned and waved him off, but she’d seen the underlying tension in his posture. The worry he’d tried so hard to hide all week.

The man she loved was hurting, and as much as Mia wished she could do more for him, could give him what he needed, she knew it was out of her hands. Because what he really needed were the results of that bloody paternity test and he needed them yesterday. But there was nothing she could do to get them. She’d tried. Rafe had tried. But apparently it was going to take as long as it took.

No cutting ahead.

No rush jobs.

Just time.

And for someone like Mia who preferred action over doing nothing, waiting for other people to do their job was intensely frustrating.

Mia hated waiting.

Ollie stared at his reflection in the mirror and barely recognised himself. A haircut had seemed like a good idea at the time, but he probably should have thought better of doing it himself. Still, he liked the shorter style better than he’d thought he would, even if he looked a bit scruffy.

Setting to work on his beard, he made sure to leave enough stubble to appease Mia’s newfound fascination with it. Especially when he had his head between her thighs.

He knew she’d been keeping him busy all week, distracting him with sex and odd jobs so he wouldn’t think about other things—paternity test things—but thoughts of Sigrid were never far from his mind.

If Sigrid was his, as he believed she was, why hadn’t Ella told him about her? He could have helped out, he would have wanted to be a part of his daughter’s life. But maybe that was the problem. Ella didn’t want a man in her life, complicating things. And if Ollie had known about Sigrid, he would have insisted on being in her life. So maybe it was better that he hadn’t been there?

He shook his head, not believing that for a second.

He may have had a shitty mother, but he had an awesome father. Ulysses Bennett was always there when his kids needed him. No matter what he was doing, where he was doing it or who he was doing it with, if one of his children needed him, he was there.

No questions asked.

No doubt about it.

That’s what Ollie wanted with Sigrid. To make her that same promise. If only he got the chance.

And he really wanted that chance.

A knock on the bathroom door snapped him out of his thoughts.

“Ollie? It’s just me, babe.”

The sound of Mia’s voice soothed his nerves, until he wondered what she’d think of his hair. Hesitantly, he called out, “Come in.”

“I just wanted to check—holy shit!” Wide eyes met his in the mirror. “Where’s your hair?”

He smirked at the instant heat that flashed in her eyes and cocked one brow. “You don’t like it?” he teased, feeling much more confident at her reaction.

“I fucking love it,” she murmured as she moved closer. Reaching up, she slid her fingers through his shortened locks and made a fist, made him growl. “You look… So. Damn. Hot.” She nodded absently as though agreeing with herself. “I really think we need to have sex now.”
