“My cooperation will depend on you.”

She cleared her throat. “What exactly does that mean?”

Her attempt at being professional wavered for a moment.

Why did she allow herself to come for him?

Why did she let him suck her wetness off his fingers?

“What do you mean?” she asked again.

“You get to ask me one question about anything. Anything at all. Names. Places. Codes.”

“In exchange for what?” Her voice lowered.

“Tobias and Margo are planning a New Year’s Eve game night, seeing as how their other guests are now snowed in as well. Come with me to their New Year’s Eve event and, of course, lunch before that, and you’ll get to ask me that one question.”

“Have you seriously lost your mind?” She shouted. The little composure she’d held onto so desperately was all gone. “You want us to attend a New Year’s Eve game-thing like we’re normal people?”

“Yes. It’ll be more like a date.”

Chapter Ten

“A date?” Peyton asked, utterly stunned and defeated. She threw the pencil onto the table, sat back, and folded her arms across her chest. He would never know just how close she was to crying in sheer confused frustration.

Why was he doing this to her?

“Is that so repulsive to you, Peyton, to go on a date with a killer like me?”

Peyton shook her head. Oh, he was going to playthatcard on her? Which part of their association did he not get? He was her prisoner.

“This isn’t a happy social gathering, Mr. Foster. You and I are not friends. We’re not even acquaintances. You’re a criminal. It’s my duty to enforce the law and take you in.”

“Well, in this scenario, we’re married,” he said, then clenched his jaw.

Peyton tilted her head. It amazed her how angry he got whenever she stated the facts about the association. They didn’t know each other. They weren’t friends.

Again, he was her prisoner. End of story.

“A small price to pay to ask me anything at all.”

Peyton closed her eyes and pressed the top of her nose with her fingers. Why did he have to make things so impossible?

“It’s a couple of hours, kitten, and I’ll tell you anything you want to know.”

“Okay.”

She was losing her mind. But in the grand scheme of things, she somehow trusted him to keep to his word that he would answer her question truthfully. Her boss had told her to gather as much information as she could from him. Her boss would just never know she had to go on adatewith him to get information from him.

“Fine. We’ll go and have lunch, and then the New Year’s event with Margo and Tobias. But that’s all.”

Declan smiled at her. She looked away immediately. She hated that when he smiled at her like that, it came with the silent, good girl, orsmart girlattached at the end.

“Ask me anything.”

“What’s the name of the man who funds the Romanian mafia?"

“Bogdan Radu,” he said without hesitation.
