A kink pleasure resort in the middle of a snowstorm. Not her finest move yet.

But then she made an even bigger mistake by tilting her head up, and something else happened as she stared at him.

She sank into his gaze, drowning in their depths, while her body quivered against his as if he had touched her naked skin; Time escaped, leaving only the two of them alone in a universe tinged with the pleasure of something so dark that it was in direct contrast with the cozy warmth of the holiday spirit surrounding them.

Why did it feel as if she knew him from another time? She quickly brushed that thought aside. It was impossible. Her social circle didn’t include assassins. And if she had come across him at work, he’d have been taken in already.

Margo's exalted relief in the background—that they were a couple apparently intokink—wasthe only thing that brought her back to her senses.

Remembering she was playing a role, she stepped out of his arms as carefully as she could when she really wanted to run in the opposite direction and offered their hosts a smile. It was the least she could do.

But Declan, as smooth as silk, just drew her back against his tall, muscular body and held her there tightly.

She couldn’t explain the effect he had on her, just that it melted her body and made her mind go crazy.

Chapter Four

Peyton hated nothing more than being caught off guard. Since Declan Foster had tumbled into her life like a fucking nuclear bomb in a snowstorm, literally everything else, big or small, seemed to catch her off guard as well.

She shouldn’t have been that surprised when she learned that Red Hills Resort was, in fact, a kink resort. It was Ellie’s thing, after all, her expedition into the world of dominance and submission.

Peyton would be lying if she said the whole concept hadn’t intrigued her just a little, despite always telling Ellie she had zero interest in that kind of stuff. Still, Ellie could have warned her.

But how did Declan know what kind of a resort it was?

After being shown to their cabin and enduring another bout of freezing cold during the short walk from the main hotel, they took off their wet coats and shoes and left them in the mud room.

That done, Peyton immediately got down to scope out a place to keep her unwanted companion restrained.

Unwanted companion?

Was she mad?

He was a killer.

But for the nine millionth time, she reminded herself that if Declan wanted her dead, she’d be long gone already, and he’d only have to use maybe three fingers on his right hand to execute the task.

So maybe keeping him restrained was a useless endeavor, but dammit, it made her feel better, and she needed some comfort, even if it came under false pretense.

The truth was, she couldn’t take it anymore. Her body, her nerves, and her excessively pounding heart could not take another moment of being near him.

She needed to regain her balance. Clear her head. Preferably locked in a bathroom for five minutes so she could hyperventilate in peace.

Spotting a beautiful handcrafted antique table that seemed heavy enough, she retrieved the weapon and the cuffs from her handbag and then directed him toward the table.

A knock on the door startled her, even though it was probably the dinner she had arranged with Margo to be sent to the cabin.

Feeling entirely too flustered, she put both the gun and cuffs back into her bag. How was she going to get through the next few days until the weather cleared, babysitting a criminal who could end her without a thought?

Declan offered her his million-dollar smile, then opened the door, had a brief though lively conversation with one of the wait staff, tipped him very generously, and sent him on his way.

Freezing cold air wafted into the cabin, but once Declan closed the door and carried in two black, water-proof bags in each hand, the cabin started to warm up again quickly enough.

She really didn’t feel like eating, but Declan had placed the food bags on the dining table and unzipped them.

Fine.

She supposed she should lethimeat.
