“I prefer to think of myself as part of the mountain, because it formed around me. And no, there aren’t any more like me anymore.”

“I’m so sorry.” Her touch softened. “Are you sure there isn’t anyone else?”

I nodded. “The ones I cared about are all gone. And I can’t remember the last time I saw anyone like me.”

“How old are you?” she asked.

“Time is a human measurement.”

Another eye roll and she gave my chest a gentle push. She’d completely relaxed in my arms, and I liked that.

“That’s an answer like, ‘I’m part of the mountain.’” She tried to mimic my voice by lowering hers and giving it a little growl. The delicious sound made my blood sing inside my veins.

Was she flirting with me?

“Your way isn’t the only way of doing things,” I reminded her. “The way time is measured has changed several times in my life. And as it hasn’t been as important to me as it is to someone with a finite amount of it, I stopped keeping track.”

“Whoa.” Hannah pulled away from me and sat on the edge of the bed. “Don’t mind me while I recover from my mind being blown.”

“It’s good for you.” I took the seat next to her. There was a vibration to her body too. Warmth. And a sweet scent. I liked being this close to a woman again, even if her body would be completely unfamiliar to me. “You wouldn’t have come to Sunset Springs if you didn’t want something different, right?”

She nodded. “Human wasn’t working for me. I mean,I’mgood at being human, but relationships with humans? Not so much.”

Good to know.

“What were you doing this deep in the mountains?” I stopped myself before I addedalone.

She leaned in closer. The vibration she called purring intensified inside my body. “Am I in trouble?”

“Do you want to be?”

“Maybe.” She sucked in a breath. “Will you punish me?”

“Is that what you want?”

She leaned back, grinning. “Do you answer every question with a question?”

“No.” I studied her. Those blue eyes were sparkling, and her cheeks were slightly flushed. It could have been from the cold. The sky had darkened quickly, and the air tasted like snow. It would start at any moment. But I had a feeling our conversation had stirred a different kind of heat inside her. I could smell her arousal.

Yes.

“Say I was a bad little human. How would you punish me?” She scraped her teeth over her bottom lip. She probably didn’t realize she was shaking, but I couldn’t miss that slight tremor.

“Before I can properly answer that question, I’d have to explore every inch of that body first.” I swallowed hard. It took everything I had not to rip the clothes off her. To taste her skin. I’d been so tempted when she was lying beside me. But it wouldn’t have been fair.

But, oh, was it tempting.

The pink in her cheeks deepened. It spread down her throat, and over the swell of cleavage that rose from her undershirt. “I’d like to explore your body too. See how you’re different than being with a human.”

“Have you ever been with a creature other than a human before?”

She shrugged, lowering her gaze. “A couple of shifters.”

I put my finger under her chin, encouraging her to look into my eyes. “Shame is a human emotion, and if your former partners were unable to please you to the point that you’re embarrassed about your interaction with them, that’s on them. Not you.”

She huffed out a laugh. “Where have you been all my life?”

“Right here, in this mountain.” I ran my thumb over her soft cheek. “But we’re not talking about me. We’re talking about you. Were all the shifters in their human forms when you were intimate with them?”
