Ignoring them, I keep all my focus on the man in front of me.

“I just figured it’d be easier.”

Bullshit.

My brow quirks up. “Easier for who exactly? Because this is perfect for me, and if you have a problem with it, well, tough luck, buddy. You didn’t hear me complain because all of you boys are walking around half-naked.”

The muscle in his jaw twitches, eyes narrowing, so I know I’ve hit a nerve.

“Fine, whatever. Are we playing or what?” Miguel asks just as Nico appears by his side.

“I figured I’d take this spot,” Nico says, glancing between Miguel and me.

Miguel snorts. “Sorry, but this one works better for me.” He rolls his shoulder. “Can’t risk injuring it, or my coach will get an aneurysm, you understand that, right?”

Nico opens his mouth, but before he can say anything, Emmett claps his hands. “In positions people.”

With an apologetic smile on his face, Nico goes to the other side to take his place.

“That was mean,” I say, crossing my arms over my chest.

Miguel smirks and bends down. “No, what was mean was that he tried to butt his way in here.”

His eyes zero in on me and don’t let go as everybody around us gets into position.

“Stop it,” I grit through clenched teeth so nobody else can hear.

“I’m not doing anything.”

“You’re staring at me like…” My tongue darts out, sliding over my lower lip.

Miguel’s eyes roam over my body, and a shiver passes down my spine at the intensity of his stare. I swear I can feel his gaze like an actual touch.

“Like?” he prompts, all innocence.

Like you want to devour me.The words are on the tip of my tongue, but I swallow them back. There was no way I’d admit it out loud.

“Somebody will notice.”

“You started it when you took off that dress.” Miguel leans closer, so close I can smell the spicy scent of his cologne. “And there was no fucking way I’d let another man put his hands all over your naked body. Especially not a man who clearly has a crush on you.”

“Game time, baby!” Emmett yells, startling me.

I pulled back immediately, realizing how close we were together, but thankfully, nobody else seemed to have noticed.

Since we’re starting on offense, when Callie blows the whistle, Jamie calls out the play. From the corner of my eye, I can see the ball fly into Nixon’s awaiting hands. I start to move, but Miguel’s arms wrap around me, pulling me into his chest in a stronghold.

“What are you doing?” I ask, looking over my shoulder at him as I try to get out of his grasp.

“What does it look like I’m doing? Defending my territory.”

My stomach twists in a knot at the possessiveness of his words. Something tells me that this doesn’t have anything to do with football, and I’m not sure how to feel about it.

Contrary to me, Hayden didn’t have any problem getting through the defense, gaining us ten yards.

The first quarter is so intense I wonder for a second if we somehow ended up in the NFL instead of Emmett’s backyard, but nope, we’re still where we’re supposed to be. We’re the first one to score a touchdown, but by the end of it, Miguel’s team has evened the score.

The second quarter is much of the same. Miguel moves past me and scores on the first try, but then we manage to retaliate, thanks to Lucas and me. Lucas fist bumps me, and Nico gives me a high five, but when I turn around, I find Miguel scowling at us from a distance.
