Now

Somebody laughs loudly, bringing me back to the present from the trip down memory lane. Squeezing my knees, I straighten, my hand lifting to rub at the ache spreading inside my chest.

I did my best not to think about Becky or Bluebonnet since we broke up, and so far, I’ve succeeded, but one look at her, just one fucking look, and all that effort is crashing down.

I run my fingers through my hair. “Fuck!”

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

I’m not sure why I’m this surprised. I knew she was still here. After all, Bluebonnet was in her blood. That was always our biggest problem. While I couldn’t wait to get the hell out of here, Becky just wouldn’t leave.

Not to go to college, and certainly not for me.

Heart still racing, I push upright and focus on that disappearing dot until she’s long gone, and the only thing left is darkness.

What the hell was I thinking? Going after her like that?

I wasn’t. That’s the whole problem. If I just stopped and thought about it, I would have realized how stupid of an idea that was. But I was never good at stopping to think when Rebecca Williams was in question. That girl had me wrapped around her finger so tightly I couldn’t think clearly any time that she was in my vicinity.

“What the hell are you doing here, Fernandez?”

My back goes still at the question thrown at me. Willing my muscles to relax, I turn slowly and face my old teammate. Just like me, he’s gotten a few more inches on him since I left. Although he stopped playing football after high school, he’s still keeping in shape. His wide shoulders fill the dark blue shirt, and there’s a dusting of stubble covering his clenched jaw, and his fingers are fisted by his sides.

I lift my gaze to his. Something about his stance made me defensive. “I don’t see how that’s any of your business, Nico.”

I always had a suspicion that Nico had a thing for Rebecca, and seeing him tonight with her only confirmed it. It made my blood boil, but I had to remind myself that she wasn’t mine. Not any longer. There was nothing that I could do. Nothing that I should do. But knowing that didn’t take away the bitter taste from my mouth.

“It is when you’re chasing after a woman who’s clearly trying to get away from you.”

I narrow my eyes on him. “What are you? A cop?”

Nico takes me in slowly, assessing me. I make sure to keep still, my glare firmly in place as his eyes meet mine. “As a matter of fact, I am.”

Great, just fucking great. Talk about bad luck.

“You know I wouldn’t do anything to her. We’re…” My words trail off as I try to find the right label.

Childhood best friends?

High school sweethearts?

Ex-lovers?

None of those felt right. Not when it came to that woman. Even after three years of separation, the hurt and heartbreak couldn’t break this bond that was between us since we were kids.

“Broken up,” Nico finishes for me. “And she clearly doesn’t want anything to do with you. Don’t do something stupid to make me have to arrest you.”

Arrest me?

Is he for real?

“Is this a threat, officer?” I ask, my voice dropping lower as I glare at him.

“It’s just a warning, Fernandez. You’ve hurt her enough as it is. Stay the fuck away from her.”

With that, he turns his back to me and walks toward the bar.

Was he telling the truth? Is he just worried about her? Like a friend would be? Or was there something more? Was there something going on between those two? Were they together?
