Placing the lid on the cupcakes, I put them next to the register and turn to the coffee machine so I can finish the order.

Mrs. Winters hums. “It’s so sad. It really is.”

Sad?

“I know. I hope he recovers quickly.”

I turn toward her, unable to stop the question from coming, “What’s going on?”

I hadn’t heard anything, but then again, my mind was all over the place between the wedding, helping Kate clean up, and tryingnotto think about Miguel, everything that had happened, and the fact that he left without saying a word.

The two women exchange a look. “You didn’t hear?”

I carefully place a lid on the cup and put it on the counter, an uneasy feeling starting to brew in my stomach at the serious matching look on their faces. “Hear what?”

Mrs. Winters shakes her head, “Luis Fernandez had a heart attack.”

I blink, unsure if I heard her correctly. She couldn’t mean…

“Yes, they even called the ambulance.” Mrs. Smith nods, her lips pressed in a tight line. “He was taken to the hospital.”

Mr. Fernandez.

As in Miguel’s dad.

Taken to the hospital.

Because of a heart attack.

A freaking heart attack.

“It’s such a shame. I tried calling Margaret to see how they were doing, but nobody picked up the phone.”

Mrs. Winters elbows her companion. “That’s because they’re probably still at the hospital. That poor, poor woman!” Her attention shifts to me. “Did you talk to her maybe?”

It takes me a moment to hear her from the ringing in my ears.

Mr. Fernandez. In a hospital.

“No, I…” I shake my head, my mouth suddenly feeling dry. Did somebody call Miguel? Tell him what happened? “I didn’t hear anything.”

“Well, if you hear something, do let us know. Maybe we can prepare them some food for when they get back from the hospital so Margaret can focus on helping her husband get better.”

“Of course.”

Mrs. Smith pats my hand, giving me a sad smile. On autopilot, I finish and process their order, and soon enough, they leave the café.

“Are you okay?” Savannah asks, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Do you need to go?”

I wanted to. I wanted to so badly, but Jennifer was off today, so I couldn’t leave before closing time. “I have to finish here first.”

“Nobody will blame you if you want to close the shop early and go check if he’s okay.”

I shake my head. “I will do that once I’m done here.”

Once I had enough time to process what I had just heard and get a grip on my emotions, the last thing Mr. and Mrs. Fernandez needed was for me to start crying when I saw them.

I can see that Savannah wants to protest, but she changes her mind at the very last moment. She stays for a while longer, most likely waiting for me to come around, but in the end, she has to leave because she has to take her grandmother to see her doctor.
