Rebecca pokes me in the chest. “Poor baby.”

“You just keep on teasing, Red.” I wrap my fingers around her wrist. “We’ll see who’ll be the last one laughing.” I rub my thumb over the inside of her wrist, feeling the goosebumps rise on her skin. “When will you be done?”

Becky’s pupils dilate, the pink of her cheeks growing darker. “Probably another thirty minutes or so. I have to clean—”

“Nope, you’re off for tonight,” Savannah interjects, reminding us we’re not alone.

Rebecca pulls back, shifting her attention to her friend, who’s smirking knowingly at us.

“What? No, I’ll help you clean up,” Rebecca protests, but Savannah is relentless.

“You set everything up because I was running late, so I’ll stay here and clean up. You guys should go and have fun.”

“You sure? We can stay and help,” I offer.

“I’m positive. Go. Have fun.”

“Thanks, I owe you.” I grab Rebecca’s hand. “C’mon, let’s get out of here.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

REBECCA

“Miguel!” I yell at him as I try to keep up with his hurried steps.

He pulled me out of the café, barely leaving me with enough time to stop and grab my purse.

Tugging my hand, he finally pulls to a stop in front of his SUV.

“What are you doing?”

But instead of answering my question, he asks one of his own. “Is your brother home?”

“Chase?” He wants to talk about Chase? “Yeah, wh—”

“Great, that means I can get you for the next few hours to myself.”

To himself?

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, I want to take you out.”

My throat bobs as my brain processes his words. “Out? Like on a date?” My heart does a little dance of excitement before reality sets in, and I can feel my stomach sink. “You know we can’t—”

“It’s not in Bluebonnet.”

“Oh…”

I blink, unsure of what to say. I knew this had ‘badidea’ written all over it. I wasn’t blind. I saw the looks women gave me when Miguel walked into Reading Nook. They were already seeing us back together, and that could never happen. I should send him home and stick to the original plan. Hell, I should probably stop this whole thing altogether. But damn it, I wanted it. I needed to forget that this could only be temporary and that after a while, he would leave just like he planned to from the get-go. I wanted to use what little time we had left and spend a few hours with this man away from everything and everybody. A few hours where we could just be normal without worrying about what other people will think or say. I craved him.

Isn’t that what it always came down to?

I wanted this man in any way I could have him. That was my biggest downfall from the very beginning.

Miguel’s hand cradles my face as those dark eyes bore into mine. “Go on a date with me, Red.”

Swallowing the lump in my throat, I nod my head. “Fine.”
