My head snaps up at the word ‘date,’ my heart doing a little flip inside my chest. Rebecca’s looking down at her clasped hands, clearly nervous about the whole thing for whatever reason.

Shifting the box to one hand, I slip my finger under her chin and lift it so she’s looking at me.

“I’m not going to say no to your treats. Thanks for bringing them over.”

“Of course, I tweaked the recipe a little, so hopefully, you’ll still like them.”

“I don’t think there was one thing you made that I didn’t like.”

Pink spreads over her cheeks at the compliment, her eyes darting away for a second. “I guess I should—”

“What are you doing later today?” I ask before she canfinish. I wasn’t ready to call this quits just yet and watch her leave.

“I have to go back to the café, but after I close, I’m going back home, why?”

“How about you meet me at the treehouse?”

Rebecca’s tongue darts out, sliding over her lower lip. “The treehouse?”

“It’s still there. I saw it when I went for a jog one morning.”

It was the treehouse that her dad built for her before he passed away, but somehow, over the years, it becameourplace. A place where we used to talk. A place where we had our first kiss. A place where we made love for the very first time.

“It is.” She nods.

“So meet me there tonight.”

“I…” Her throat bobs, but she nods. “Okay. I’ll see you there.”

Hell yeah.

“Okay,” I agree. My gaze falls to her mouth and lingers there. I wanted to lean down and kiss her, but we were out in the open. Besides, we weren’t alone. “Tonight.”

“Tonight.”

With one last glance, she turns around, almost bumping into the bench in the process, but she quickly steadies herself before walking away.

My gaze stays on her until she’s out of view. Running my fingers through my hair, I let out a shaky breath and rejoined the guys, who were standing by the sidelines, watching the whole interaction.

“Who was that? Your girlfriend?” Austin snickers, wiggling his brows suggestively.

“That’s none of your business.”

“What do you think, dude? Of course it’s his girlfriend, or he wants her to be. He was smiling like a fool at her,” Kennyadds. “Something like when James smiles when he talks to Millie.”

James shoves him away. “Shut up.”

“Hey, if she brought me food, I’d be smiling like a fool at her, too.” Austin tries to reach for the box. “That was Miss Becky, right? The one from the Reading Nook? She has some pretty sweet goods. What’cha got here?”

I slap his hand away. “That’s mine, dude. But how about this, if you win a game of scrimmage, I might be tempted to share?”

The boys exchange a look. “Game on.”

Toeing off my shoes in the mudroom sometime later, I step into the kitchen only to be greeted by the scent of tomato, ground beef, and spices hanging in the air. Mom’s humming softly to a country tune playing on the radio, but she must hear me enter because she looks over her shoulder. “There you are! I was wondering where you disappeared to.”

“Timothy asked me to stop by the school because some of the kids from the football team practice there during the summer.”

Mom’s brows quirked up. “That was nice of you.”
