He made it.

He got his dream after all.

A part of me was happy for him. I knew better than most how hard he worked, but the other part… The other part couldn’t help but wonder, was it worth it? Him leaving, his betrayal, my heartbreak… was it all worth it?

Forcing myself to look away from the figure on the field, I press my foot against the gas and drive to the smaller field on the side.

Parking my car in the first open space, I grab the bag and coffee cup and jump out. Almost immediately, I’m greeted by the loud yelling coming from the sidelines.

Following the sounds, I find Savannah standing by the field. A ball cap is placed on top of her head, a whistle hanging around her neck as she cheers loudly at a girl who’s probably five or six that’s rushing toward the end zone. Some of her friends, standing by Savannah on the sidelines, jump around as the girl all but falls into the end zone.

A smile curls my lips as I watch Savannah fist pump in victory, just as the kids rush toward their friend on the field, pulling her in a group hug.

“Good game, Coach,” I say as I come to a stop next to her.

“Hey, Becs.” Sav turns around, a beaming smile on her lips. “Thanks. It’s good to see the kids happy.”

“I brought you coffee and muffins.”

Her eyes fall on the package in my hands. “Shi— Shoot. Grams was being difficult, so I was running late and completely spaced out.”

“No worries. I figured, so I decided to drive here and bring you your order. Which seems to be right on time for a celebratorysnack.”

When nobody applied to coach peewee football, Savannah decided to step up and do it herself. Although she doesn’t know much about the game, she felt terrible when she heard about it and saw how some of her kids were disappointed.

“You’re a Godsend. How much do I owe you?”

“Coach!” kids start yelling, demanding Savannah’s attention.

I wave her off. “We’ll settle it later. Go and have fun.”

Savannah points her finger at me. “Don’t think I’ll forget.” She takes a step back. “Drinks this week?”

I nibble at the inside of my cheek. “I don’t know, Sav. I’ve been so absent with all the wedding stuff going on. I don’t…”

“C’mon, it’s just one drink. An hour tops. I need somebody to complain about Mark.”

“Ugh, what did he do now?”

I swear I don’t know why she couldn’t just dump the guy and be done with him already. She deserved so much better than the guy who always put himself first.

“I’ll tell you over the drinks at The Hut. It’ll even be my treat since I know you won’t let me pay for the muffins.”

I guess she had me there.

“Fine.” I lift my finger. “Onedrink, and I get to choose the day.”

“Perfect!” She flashes me a grin as the kids pull her away. Shaking my head, I turn around and start walking back to my car. As I leave the kid’s field, my gaze instantly goes to the larger football field.

Biting the inside of my cheek, I look at it momentarily. I should go to my vehicle and get back to the café. I had barely enough time to breathe these days, but it was like an invisible string was pulling me toward it.

I slowly move closer until my fingers touch the metal fence surrounding it. I curl my finger through the metal loops as Iinhale deeply, the scent of freshly cut grass invading my senses.

How many times had I sat out there on the bleachers?

Too many to count.

It didn’t matter if it was practice or a game; if Emmett and Miguel were out on the field, you could find me sitting on the bleachers watching them. It was like seeing magic happen. They were that good.
