Just when I think she’ll jab me once again, her palm flattens against my chest, her expression softening. “I am. Why do you think I’m saying it? I can see the way you look at her.”

“I don’t look at her in any way.”

She lets out a soft chuckle. Her hand cups my cheek, and she gives me a small pat. “Wouldn’t you like to think that?”

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

REBECCA

What the hell was I thinking?

I wasn’t. That was the whole problem, wasn’t it? I let my impulse take over.

No, not impulse.

Jealousy.

Just thinking about it has the color rising up my cheeks.

I wasn’t jealous of the women Miguel was talking to. I had no right to be. Miguel wasn’t mine. Not any longer. But all rational thought left my brain when I saw no one other than Lauren and Mary Sue fawning over his every word, their claws sinking into his arm possessively, all while staring at him like they wanted to devour him.

Seriously, what was wrong with them?

But then again, was it really surprising? Mary Sue’s been jumping from one guy to the next even before we finished high school, trying to find somebody she could drag to the altar. Lauren, on the other hand, did exactly that.Twiceso far. And both times ended up terribly, but apparently, she still hasn’t learned her lesson.

“What’s with that frown betweenyour brows?”

I jump in surprise at the question to find Savannah standing in front of me, a contemplative look on her face.

“Geez, give a girl a little warning, would ya?”

“That’s why you have the bell.”

Well, that was the idea, but I guess I was too stuck in my own head to hear it. Not that I would tell her that.

I check the time on my wrist. “You’re here early.”

“I finally got a few extra minutes, so I figured I’d get here and check in on you. Plus, I need that double espresso of yours like yesterday.”

My brow quirks up as I make my way to the coffee machine and start making her drink. “Bad day?”

“More like a bad week. Grams is being stubborn, per usual. And then I had a fight with Mark.”

“What did he do this time?” I look over my shoulder just in time to catch her rolling her eyes.

“He has another work weekend.” Savannah slips into the chair at the counter, crossing her arms in front of her.

“Wasn’t that his excuse last week? Like seriously, how many work weekends can one person have?”

“And when I asked him exactly that, he had the audacity to say that not everybody was as lucky as teachers to have the whole summer off. Can you imagine that?”

“Lucky?” my mouth falls open. “That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Did you punch him? Please tell me you punched him.”

Savannah chuckles, but the amusement doesn’t reach her eyes. “If he were in front of me, I would have been so tempted. I swear.”

“And nobody could blame you for it.” I place the coffee cup in front of her. “Here you go.”

Savannah takes a long sip from the cup, her eyes closing for a second as she savors the taste of the black liquid. “This isexactly what I needed,” she sighs happily. Those blue eyes open and turn their focus on me. “Anyway, we don’t have long before people start coming, so forget about my stupid boyfriend. What’s going on withyou?”
