I bet he gave her the idea. Anything so he could spend time with her.

How many moments like this did the two of them have? How many times did she bring him food? Or did she just stop to see him at work? Did she ask him to try out her new recipes like she did with me when we were dating back in the day?

“What does that mean?” she asks, some of that anger back.

“Just that you and Nico are awfully close, that’s all.”

“We’re some of the rare people who stayed in Bluebonnet. So we hang out.” She shrugs.

Fucking shrugs.

“Is there something going on between you and Nico?” I ask, my voice deadly low. The muscle in my jaw flexes as I stare intently at the road, waiting for her answer. The last thing I needed was to crash us into a tree.

From the corner of my eye, I can see her turn toward me. “What?!”

“Is. There. Something. Going. On. Between. You. And. Nico?” I grit through clenched teeth, each word feeling like it was ripped from my mouth.

I glance toward her. The surprise disappears from her face, and instead, rage slowly starts boiling to the surface. If I wasn’tso angry—so jealous because that’s what this was, red hot jealousy at a man who used to be one of my friends—maybe I would have seen this coming, but I was too focused on the anger and keeping this damn car from swerving.

“Stop.”

“What?” I glance quickly toward her before returning my attention to the road. We were almost at her house, but not just quite.

“I said, stop.”

Before I can say anything, she unbuckles her seatbelt and reaches for the door handle.

I press my foot against the break, and the car jerks forward as it comes to a sudden stop. Rebecca doesn’t seem the least bit fazed as she pushes the door open and jumps out of the car.

“Shit.”

Putting the car in park, I fiddle with my belt for a second before it finally gives, and I get out of the SUV. Thankfully, she didn’t get far, so I can catch up to her easily. My fingers wrap around her wrist, and I tug her back.

“What the hell do you think you are doing? You could have broken your neck!” I yell at her, my breaths coming out in ragged pants.

“You have no right, Fernandez!” Rebecca shouts, jabbing her finger into my chest. “No fucking right.”

“Oh, no? I don’t have the right to ask if one of my friends is dating my ex-girlfriend?”

“No!” This time, her fist connects with my chest. “Because it’s none of your Goddamn business who I’m hanging out with or sleeping with, for that matter.”

My teeth grind together as my brain focuses on one thing, and one thing only: Rebecca in bed with another man. His hands on her body. Her whispering his name.

Before she can punch me once again, I grab her hand. “Do Ineed to remind you that you were the first to ask about my dating life?” I ask softly, leaning down so we’re face to face. “If you can ask, so can I. Two can play this game, Red.”

“Oh, no, you don’t. You lost the right to ask those kinds of questions when you left.” She tries to pull her hand out of mine, but I’m not budging. “And the only reason I asked was because there was a girl calling you just after I saw you having drinks with another woman. Not that that’s anything new for you. As we established, you’re used to dating multiple women at the same time.”

“Left?” I growl, taking a step closer, so close she has to tilt her head back so she would be able to look up at my face. My voice drops deadly low as I whisper, “You’re the one who left.”

She presses her finger against my chest, tilting her chin up. “What did you expect me to do? Stay around and watch you fuck your side-piece for kicks and giggles? Join in on the fun? What, Miguel? What did you want from me?”

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

REBECCA

Three years ago

“I don’t know what to do, Mrs. Santiago.” I shake my head as I pace around the room. My fingers are intertwined so tightly that my knuckles have turned white. “We’re losing her. More and more each day, and I don’t know…”
