My body floods with relief, and I beam at him. He bends his head, and our lips meet again for a slow, sweet kiss.

When we part, Felicity pretends she wasn’t staring and drops the book again. “Sorry.” She picks it up. “Congratulations, you two. Looks like the legend worked for you both. I guess the book’s perfect record continues.”

I grab Oliver’s arm and hug myself to his side. I’m not letting go until Christmas. “And now it’s your turn. Merry Christmas, Felicity.”

Once Upon a Christmas Promise

SUSAN CARLISLE

ChapterOne

Laurel Marsh’shands shook as she straightened her suit jacket. This was what she had been working toward her entire career: a promotion to senior art agent.

She entered the glass office where Joe, her boss and boyfriend, along with Mr. Antwan, the owner of the agency, waited. She offered them an apologetic smile. “Gene should be here any moment.”

After courting the artist Gene McGivern for over three months, she and Joe had finally pulled off a coup by getting him to agree to let the Antwan Art Agency represent him. He was coming in today to sign the papers. Except he was fifteen minutes late.

She checked her watch, the one with diamond chips Joe had given her when he’d been promoted over her. He’d used it as a token of his promise to help her achieve a promotion as well. “I’ll go see if McGivern is in the lobby.”

Joe stepped out behind her. He hovered a hand over his immaculate hair without touching it. His eyes narrowed as he hissed, “Where is he?”

“I spoke to him yesterday and he said he would be here.”

“You know your promotion depends on us signing him. I thought you had this.” He stalked two paces one way then back

“I did. I do.”

Joe leaned toward her, glaring. “Then where is he?”

“Laurel?” the front receptionist said.

“Yes.” Laurel hadn’t even heard the woman approach.

“There’s a Mr. McGivern on the phone asking to speak to you.”

“I’ll take it in the conference room.” Laurel reentered with Joe right behind her. She pushed a button on the phone sitting on the table. She spoke into the speaker. “Mr. McGivern, is everything okay? We’ve been waiting for you.”

“I’m not signing.” Mr. McGivern’s voice boomed around the room.

Her stricken look met Mr. Antwan’s then Joe’s. She stammered. “Excuse me? Why?”

“A black cat ran under my ladder today.”
