“Sawyer!” I scold, rushing over and knocking it out of his hands. “It seems private.”

“She had it sitting out. It’s not even hidden. I think that means it’s okay.”

“Fine.”

He picks it back up and reads it aloud. “Hey, bunny.” He stops, his lip curling. “Bunny? Are you kidding me?”

“Keep going.” Now I’mreallydying to know.

He clearly sees that, so he darts away.

“Oh, no you don’t.” I chase him, grabbing him by the shirt and pulling him back to snatch the note. He turns to run away again, and he trips over my foot. We both tumble onto the bed, me falling flat on top of Sawyer’s chest.

We’re both laughing, but my body isn’t. It’s feeling zings of electricity and… well, it’s liking this.

But I’m definitely not.

When I go to climb off of him, I get tangled in his arms and legs and end up slipping off the silk bed onto the floor. I land with a thud.

In an instant, I see Sawyer’s face over mine. “You okay?”

I bust into another chuckle, and Sawyer joins me. I love his laugh. It’s so contagiously melodic and heartfelt, and it makes me laugh harder. I leap up, brushing myself off and recomposing myself. I act like I’m turning and walking away when I whiz around and snatch the card from his fingers.

“Hey, not fair!” He makes a grab for it, but I’ve got it, and I’m already heading for Eleanor’s bathroom. When I’m inside, I manage to shut the door and lock it.

I cry out, “Dawson, one. Sawyer, zero!” before opening the card and reading,

Hey Bunny,

We only have two days left, so I plan to make the most of every minute we have together to take in that beautiful face and stunning soul.

A click of the doorknob draws my eyes up, and I see the lock pop open. Sawyer swings the door open, rushing inside holding a bent bobby pin. “You honestly thought you could keep me out of here?”

“Hey, I could’ve been using the bathroom!” I feign an offended look.

He rolls his eyes, his palm up. “Let’s call a truce. Please. Hold up the letter, and we’ll both read it. Together.”

“Fine.” My curiosity has now trumped my need to one-up Sawyer. I hold it up and continue reading.

This week flew by. I guess that’s what happens when you meet your soul mate. And you are mine, Eleanor Maryann Quinn. Know that wherever we are, my heart is always with you.

Always and forever,

A

“A!” I cry out. “Who the heck is ‘A’?”

“No idea.”

“I can’t believe it.” I turn the card over. “When was this written?”

“No idea.” Sawyer sounds almost offended. “My sister had a serious boyfriend we didn’t know about.”

I fold my arms. “And now we need to figure out who it was.”

ChapterFour

We arriveat the Cherry Creek High School auditorium first thing in the morning, and it’s hard to be here knowing I won’t see Eleanor dancing beautifully on the stage anymore. I have so many memories in this space, and almost all of them include her. Our high school graduation was here. Most of Eleanor’s performances were here, and I’d come to cheer her on as she danced expertly, giving it her heart and soul. I, on the other hand, have never had any rhythm, nor the desire to dance on stage.
