None of that matters.

Because Rory is not the goal. She only complicates it.

And tonight, I think I needed that reminder more than ever.

Chapter Three

Rory

––––––––

“Rumor around campusis that Archer Copeland beat up one of his teammates last night for trying to kiss you.” Lexi slides into the seat next to me, setting her laptop on our shared table.

“I’m sorry, what?” I’m immediately taken aback by her words, not sure if I’m more confused or panicked by them.

“So it didn’t happen? I mean, all the girls are talking about it.”

“What girls?”

“Like everyone.” She looks at me like I’ve grown five heads, and I quickly realize that maybe that’s how I’m looking at her. “So it did happen or it didn’t? From the looks of you, something happened.”

Lexi and I have been friends since sophomore year when we ended up sharing an English class. She’s not what I would call a great friend, but I like her well enough. She’s super outgoing, which I guess helps because she takes any attention away from me, which I like, but sometimes she can be a little much. Like right now, for example.

“No. I mean, yes, he pulled Tigs off me because he was super drunk and tried to swallow my face.” I shiver at the memory. I love Tigs, but the other night he was out of control. I don’t know what would have happened if Archer hadn’t shown up when he did.

Not that I bothered thanking him because really, him interfering made the situation even worse. I went from a few people watching to the entire freaking bar staring at me in less than a few seconds.

“But it wasn’t like that,” I quickly add.

“That’s not what everyone else is saying.”

“Well, not everyone else was there,” I say, even though there were in fact a lot of people there. Many of whom were still staring at me several minutes later when I decided it was time to call it a night. Guess that’s what I get for trying to let loose.

And now, here I am, the talk of the freaking school apparently.

“It really wasn’t a big deal,” I continue, forcing my voice to sound as casual as possible. Getting defensive will only make matters worse because then it looks like it was more than it was. And let’s be real, it really was nothing. He didn’t do anything Enzo or one of the other guys likely would have done had Tigs actually kissed me.
