“It isn’t a date.” She corrects me a second time. “But yes, I should go.” She turns. “Thank you for walking me. I’ll see you Tuesday.”

“See ya Tuesday.” I watch her cross the street alone, my name and jersey number printed across the back of the jacket I gave her to wear giving me a weird sense of satisfaction that stays with me long after she disappears inside. It gives me so much satisfaction, in fact, that I almost don’t think about the fact that she’s with another man as I make the walk back to my dorm.

“Um, excuse me!” Alinasits up straighter as I slip into the seat across from her, not missing the fact that Tigs has yet to arrive. Either that or maybe he stepped away for a minute.

I may have forgotten to mention to Archer that Enzo and Alina would also be joining Tigs and me for pizza. Wink. Wink. Though now I feel a little guilty for letting him just assume Tigs and I would be alone. Especially after he walked me here and even gave me his jacket.

Archer Copeland, star football player, pretend player, and closet gentleman? What is happening with the world?

“What are you wearing?” She eyes Archer’s jacket, which I hadn’t realized until now that it has his last name and number printed in the top left corner of the chest area.

“Oh, um, it was raining, so Archer let me borrow his jacket.”

“Uh-oh.” Enzo snorts out a laugh. “You know what that means.” He speaks directly to Alina, who nods enthusiastically.

“What? What does it mean?”

“It means he’s staked his claim.” Enzo is the first to answer.

“What?” I gape openly at him.

“Seriously, Rory. If a football player gives you anything to wear with his name and number on it, it means he wants everyone to know who you belong to.”

“That’s preposterous.” I shake my head adamantly. “It was raining. He let meborrowhis jacket.”

“Did you ask to borrow it?” Enzo asks, dropping his elbows onto the table in front of him, accentuating the muscles in his forearms.

“Well, no...”
