“You two are sickeningly cute,” I can’t help but say, feeling like I just witnessed something pretty big for my best friend.

“Aren’t we?” She doesn’t disagree, slipping her arm through mine as we watch the rest of the players load the bus.

I don’t see Archer, and as the last few trickle out, followed by the coaching staff, I can only assume he’s already on the bus. I try to ignore the slight pang of disappointment I feel that I won’t get to see him before we head back to campus.

“Well, Rory. I think it’s safe to say that this weekend changed both our lives,” she says, turning her face toward me.

“You might be right.” I allow myself to admit, though I don’t see myself writing home about Archer anytime soon, but I can’t deny that last night changed a lot about how I feel about, well, nearly everything.

“Come on.” She tugs on my arm as the first bus begins to pull away. “We should find Kim. She said she’d give us a ride back so we wouldn’t have to be stuck in a car with Marcy again.” She groans, referring to Carson’s girlfriend.

I don’t really know either of them. Carson is one of the running backs, I learned on the way here. I still don’t know how Alina knows Marcy exactly, but it’s clear she’s not a big fan and was only using her for the ride.

“Did you tell Marcy that?”

“Yeah, a couple of the other girls are catching a ride back with her anyway, so this way we’re not all crammed together.”

“You won’t hear me complain.”

I pull my phone out of my back pocket to check the time, only to see a text from Archer come through at the exact same time.

Archer:Look up.

My head instantly snaps up just in time to see Archer in the window of the last bus that’s slowly pulling away.

He doesn’t say anything. He just gives me a simple wave and a smile before the bus disappears around the corner and I lose sight of him.

“Oh, girl... You got it bad.” Alina clucks her tongue against the roof of her mouth.

“Shut up. I do not.” I shove her away, making my way in the direction I assume I’m supposed to go.

Alina quickly catches up to me.

“Rory and Archer sitting in a tree—” She starts to sing.

“One more word”—I grit my teeth, cutting her off—“and I’ll be finding my own way home.”

“Fine.” She pouts. “You ruin all my fun.”

“Your idea of fun is questionable at best.” I snort, allowing her once again to slip her arm through mine.

“For what it’s worth, I think you two make a banging couple.”

“For what it’s worth, we’re not a couple and probably never will be.”

“Never say never, Rory,” she sing-songs, practically skipping me across the still rather full parking lot.

We find Kim pretty quickly and within the hour are back on the road to campus. I have mixed feelings about returning with everything that happened. In truth, I have mixed feelings about a lot of things, almost all of which involve one Archer Copeland.
