The instant the door snaps closed behind us, Rory breaks into a fit of nervous laughter.

“Are you okay?” I can’t help but smile.

“Do you think she saw us?” Her laughter dies abruptly.

“Doubtful. She seems to walk around with her head in the clouds, that one. Besides, who cares if she did?”

“I care,” she whisper hisses. “I need her recommendation and I don’t thinkmakes out with boys in classroomsis exactly what Laboe is looking for.”

“Maybe if they’re fun, they are.”

“Archer.” She blows out a hard breath. “This isn’t funny.”

Says the girl who was just laughing,I think but don’t say.

“You’re right. It isn’t.” I place my hands on her shoulders, dipping down to meet her gaze. “She didn’t appear to have any idea and next time I’ll be more careful about where I kiss you.” I grin.

“Next time?”

“Did I do or say anything that would lead you to believe I’m done kissing you?”

“No... But—”

“But nothing.” I kiss her again for good measure. “What are you doing now?”

“Like right now?” She seems surprised by my question.

“Right now.”

“Um, nothing, I guess.”

“You hungry?”

She doesn’t wait long to answer.

“I am, actually.”

“I hear there’s this amazing pizza place down the way,” I tease, remembering the night I walked her there last week so clearly.

Seeing her in my jacket, I think that’s really what set this whole thing in motion. I liked how she looked in my number. I wanted people to see her wearing it. I wanted the entire fucking campus to see, to know that she belongs to number nine.

And then I wanted it to be true.

“Really?” She plays along. “I’d be curious to try it out.”

“Well then, Miss Hensley.” I turn, extending my arm to her. “Shall we?”

“We shall.” She slips her arm through mine and allows me to lead her out of the building.

“You know, the first time I walked you here, it took everything I had not to follow you inside and crash your date,” I tell her as we make our way down the sidewalk.

“It wasn’t a date,” she corrects. “Alina and Enzo were there too.”

“I know.” I laugh when I feel her eyes burning holes in the side of my face.

“You knew?”

“Enzo told me.”
