Not that I’m less than Archer or even undeserving. I know I’m not. It’s just... well, it’s hard to explain.

“I think my bestie deserves another drink,” Alina announces, quickly swooping in to steal me away from Archer, pulling me through a thick crowd of people on our way to the kitchen.

“I still have a little bit,” I tell her as she steals my cup, dumps the contents in the sink, and then turns to refill it from the keg.

“If you let beer sit for very long, it tastes like warm piss,” she tells me, handing me a fresh drink.

“How do you know what piss tastes like?” I can’t help but ask, earning me a playful swat to my arm.

“You know what I mean.” She sticks her tongue out at me, lifting her own cup to her lips. “So it’s really happening then?” I turn, following her line of sight, which leads to Archer, who’s still standing among the crowd talking to Enzo.

“What is?” I pretend not to know what she’s talking about.

“Don’t play innocent with me. You let him kiss you in a room full of people. Hell, I’ve never known you to kiss anyone, let alone do it in front of dozens of people.”

“I didn’t mean to. It’s like... It’s like he kisses me and my brain goes wonky.” I try to explain.

“I know the feeling.” She smiles.

“So I take it things are going well with Enzo?”

“You could say that.” Her eyes come back to me. “Something’s changed. I don’t know how to describe it, but trust me when I say, I’m starting to see another side to Enzo.”

“And that’s a good thing?” I just need to clarify.

“A very good thing.” She nods slowly. “But enough about me. I can’t believe you’re here.”

“Archer talked me into coming after our session today. Well, technically he talked me into going to dinner with him and then at dinner he talked me into coming here. He’s...” I pause, choosing my words carefully. “He’s different than I imagined,” I admit.

“I told you, didn’t I?” She arches a perfectly shaped brow. “I told you that you were judging him too harshly. Do you know that I’ve seen him out at bars and parties and never once seen him kiss a girl?”

“Oh, I’m sure he’s kissed plenty of girls,” I grumble, the thought making me more uneasy than I’d like it to.

“But never in public. I mean, sure, he lets them hang all over him like he’s a coat rack, but I’ve never actuallyseenhim kiss someone until I walked into this room and saw him swallowing my best friend’s face.”

“Speaking of...” I clear my throat. “Have you seen him around with anyone else the last few days?”

“Nope.” She shakes her head. “I’ve seen him, just not with anyone else. As a matter of fact, I think it was this past Thursday, I was eating with Enz, and he came into the cafeteria with Higgins and I think Ryder. Anyway, some chick tried to climb into his lap the instant they sat down and he moved so quickly that she hit the edge of the bench and then damn near toppled over to the ground. He caught her, of course, but she stomped away a few moments later looking like she just sucked on a sour-ass piece of candy.”

“Seriously?” I bark out a laugh.

“Yep. It was actually quite comical.”

“He asked me to be exclusive,” I admit out loud.

“Um, come again?” She stands up straighter like somehow that will allow her to hear me better.

“He said we don’t have to label it, but we agreed not to see other people until we figure out, well, what this is and what we want.”

“Oh, honey, you already know what you want, and so does he.”

“It’s not simple.”

“But it is.”

“Says the one who took months of convincing to date a guy who’s perfect for you,” I retort.

“You know I have a commitment phobia.”
