Chase walks over and draws me into his arms. I go gladly, grateful for his strength, even as it scares me to involve him in this. Gently, tenderly, he angles my face up to his. My mouth is already open as his descends, greedy for this.

For the grounding.

The soaring.

The connection.

I’m sure the kiss is supposed to be soft and comforting. But I push up, hungry for more. As my tongue finds his, tangling and teasing, we both moan. The passion is never far away, the coals always smoldering, excited to ignite. I press my breasts into Chase’s chest, needing the friction as my skin tingles with awareness. He groans deep in his chest, reaching down to pull my hips against his growing hardness.

This is the physical, primal draw that brought us here, to this moment, despite the barriers and obstacles. This is the heart searing, soul awakening connection that’s given me hope when there was none.

Chase pulls away, already panting just like I am. He presses his forehead down to mine, the knowledge that the real world is clamoring for attention cooling the inferno that was about to detonate.

“Give me a chance to hash things out,” Chase murmurs. “In the meantime, promise me that you won’t go back there.”

I nod, finally able to uncurl a small smile here, in the warmth of his arms. “Of course, Chase. I promise.”

He lets out an exhale as if relieved to hear that, then steps away. Curling back up into the chair, I take a deep breath to calm my racing heart. I need to be careful, to keep my guard up. Night Fang are dangerous and a lot of money is on the line.

I have to do this for Peter. Even if I’m lost, I have to find my way.

My brother’s life is at stake.

Chapter2

Chase

Ihaven’t been to the bar in a long while, but my legs almost carry me right back to it. My body remembers the motions, remembers the routes as though I’ve lived here all my life. I didn’t frequent downtown all too often before, but that’s changed.

Since I started investigating Night Fang.

Since I met Aria.

Never realizing how closely the two are interwoven.

I enter the bar and am greeted by a lacking sight. At least the room is cleaner than I thought, with a few areas of neon lighting and wood finish. It’s fairly empty, safe for the few who frequent the barstools right in front of the barkeep.

Zayn’s there, shot in hand. Thankfully, no empty bottles by his side. Either he got here early or he’s choosing not to drink. He looks behind him when I get close enough to hear my footsteps, motioning for me to come over with a simple tilt of his head. Luckily there’s no one next to him, and the closest person is sitting on the couch at the rear.

I look at the bartender and the selection behind him. I see neither lick nor hair of sauvignon on his shelf. A pity, really. “Just a beer,” I say, slipping him a bank note over the counter. I need to keep my wits about me. The red-eyed man is no doubt waiting for me to make a mistake. Waiting for me to be vulnerable.

“Glad you could make it,” Zayn says.

“Figured you’ve invited me enough times,” I respond, making myself comfortable on the barstool. I’ve resisted Zayn’s frequent offers to meet here after a shift.

Now, though, I have a reason to encourage his attempts at a friendship.

We take a swig of your drinks, and with a relaxed yawn Zayn slams his glass down, half empty. “I must admit, despite being partners, you’re still quite the enigma.”

I chuckle. “What would you like to know?” He’s obviously prying, and I’m willing to play. I’m not drunk enough to let anything slip, but I need to suggest a meeting with Aria, so indulging him might be the best option.

Zayn smiles. “Is the Big Bad Wolf seeing anyone?”

I raise an eyebrow. “Why would that be important?”

“I’m just curious,” he admits with a shrug. “You’ve got the looks and you own a freaking company. There’s probably a whole line waiting.”

I wouldn’t know. And if there is, it doesn’t matter. One look at Aria and every other woman on the planet faded into the background.
