“Until?” I echo, my brows itching to descend.

“Until I discovered I can’t trust Rykard.”

I lose the fight and my eyebrows slam down. Chase trusts Rykard. Looks up to him. "What do you mean?"

"He had some documents hidden in his room. Documents on Zac," Holly says. "His name and age were blacked out, but there was a picture of him."

Why would Rykard have those hidden at home? What’s more, the details that could identify Zac were blurred out. Why would Rykard do something like that, what reason would he have to hide Zac's name and age?

Holly brings her legs up and curls her arms around them. “And then he sent Chase to find me.” Her lips twist in a wry smile. “And here we are.”

I have no idea which question to ask first. What does any of this mean? But just as I open my mouth, my phone dings and I curse internally. I should’ve put it on silent. Pulling it out, I don’t even glance at the screen as I flick off the sound. “Sorry, I’ll ignore it—”

Holly’s already getting up. “No, you see who it is.” She smiles weakly. “I need to pee.”

She’s gone before I can object, clearly needing a break from the intensity of our conversation, so I do as she suggests and check my cell. It’s a text from Peter.

Really, sis?!? A cop?

The sooner you accept it, the better.

I shake my head, not wanting the first real conversation with my brother to go like this.

How are you feeling?

Like I’ve been interrogated. You know I’m the victim here, right?

They’re trying to get to the bottom of it. So everyone is safe.

The only response is a laughing emoji. The one with tears springing from the eyes.

What’s that supposed to mean?

This is bigger than the Alpha of Wild Heart and his minions.

Frowning, I quickly type out the next response, unsure what he’s trying to tell me.

And why it feels like a threat…

What do you know?

I won’t ever talk, sis. And if you love me, you won’t ask me too.

The frown deepens. I forgot about Peter’s tendency for emotional blackmail.

I just want you safe and well.

Then we’re on the same page.

Another laughing emoji quickly follows.

I’m about to type again when another message pings.

Wanna catch up for dinner tonight? Just the two of us…

Sure. Looking forward to it.

I sigh, tucking the phone back into my jeans. I’ve spent so long doing everything I can to get Peter back, and now that he’s here, there’s tension. It’s not how I imagined it would go. Dinner is a good idea. We can reconnect. I can make sure he’s fine.
