“What else did she do? Add blockers to my body wash? Check I was still a virgin as I slept, so Lawrence got exactly what he paid for?” My voice rises as the sick feeling in my belly grows.

I’m going to be sick.

Swallowing hard, I’m looking for a place to throw up because I don’t see myself making it to a bathroom, when the door flies open.

Hali is red-faced and out of breath. “Lawrence Wentworth is at the gate. Devin is holding him up, but if we don’t let him in, he’ll know for sure that something is going on here.”

For one quarter of a second, no one moves.

And then everyone explodes out of their seats.

Rune strides with purpose to the door. “Cian, get Everleigh and Della upstairs.” He lances Della with a hard stare. “If she does anything to let Lawrence know Everleigh is here, silence her.”

Della splutters as she scrambles out of her seat. “I didn’t bring him here. I wouldn’t betray my sister.”

But we’re not really sisters at all. Are we?

Rune shakes his head, and it’s clear he doesn’t believe her. “We’ll see about that. Get them upstairs, Cian. Ky. You’re with me for this meeting. Hali, tell Devin to let Lawrence in. Nancy?”

Nancy pops into the room, her expression as anxious as mine feels. She must have been hovering outside, waiting for instructions.

Rune grips her shoulder. “Start cleaning the entryway. I don’t care what you use on the floors, but make it strong.”

One sniff of my scent and Lawrence would know I’m here.

My knuckles throb. It took a lot for me to believe nothing bad would happen if I accepted the pencil and pad Rune left for me on the dining room table.

Not a lot. It took everything.

It took even more to flip open that sketchbook, reach for the pencil, and let myself do something I was terrified I’d forgotten how to do. Worse, accept that maybe Lawrence had killed my passion for drawing with his punishments.

Now I could go back there.

Back to more abuse. More punishments. And my heat… There would be no suppressants in his house. I’ll be back to begging him for his knot. Begging for something I don’t want, but the omega in me does. This time, I won’t have any more stolen birth control pills to prevent any unwanted pregnancy.

He could get me pregnant, and then what? What would I do? If I escaped, where would I work? How would I support both me and a child? What if—

“Everleigh?”

A hand lands on my shoulder, and I jump, meeting Cian’s concerned gaze.

I’m breathing hard, and a cold sweat has dampened the hair on the nape of my neck.

Everyone has left the room but me and Cian. And Della.

Della, my little sister who found me, says she didn’t betray me, but minutes after she appeared, so did Lawrence. Can I trust her or was Kylian right to treat her as a threat?

With Lawrence on his way, that’s a question for later.

“Let’s go,” I tell Cian.

We rush upstairs, passing Nancy, who’s using a mop bucket with hot, soapy water that smells of potent cleaner to scrub the floor. She gives me a reassuring smile.

I can’t find it in myself to return it. Because Lawrence is here, and if he finds me here, it won’t only be me he destroys. It will be Nancy, Hali, and the three alphas who seemed to have made it their mission to protect me.
