them again, as if he’s getting ready to twist Lawrence’s head right off.

I refuse to believe he’ll do it.

Right up until Cian reaches for Lawrence, which is when I step in front of him. Body blocking him. We have Byron Wentworth parked up outside and he’s on the phone. Doesn’t matter who he’s on the phone to. He can’t witness Cian killing his son in front of him.

There are other less messy ways to deal with Lawrence. Ways that won’t lead to cops turning up to our house and finding Everleigh here.

Out of the corner of my eye, I spot Lawrence turning around as I grip Cian by the shoulder and manhandle him into our office.

The second I have him there, I shove the door shut and hiss, “What the fuck are you doing?”

But Cian isn’t looking at me. He has his head swiveled back to the front door. He tries to push me aside. I tighten my grip on his shoulder and shove him back against the wall. “Cian!”

The front door snicks closed as I’m still fighting to keep Cian in the room. “What the hell is your problem?”

Before he can answer, a car engine starts up outside and the office door swings open.

Rune steps in with his brow furrowed as his eyes bounce between Cian and me. “He’s gone. Now what the hell was—”

Cian is breathing hard, his eyes glittering with fury. Again, he attempts to wrestle past me. I grab his shoulders and pin him against the wall. “What the fuck has gotten into you?Stop.”

“Everleigh is an artist. Did you know?” Cian demands.

I’ve never seen him lose it like this before. Rune, yes, but not Cian.

Rune nods once. “I saw a picture she drew of me. It was… it was incredible.”

Breath ragged, Cian stares a hole through the office door, like he’s waiting for us to get out of his way so he can go after Lawrence. That is not typical Cian behavior. It’s mine. “He was cracking her knuckles with a wooden ruler. Apparently, anytime he found her drawing, he would do it. She stopped drawing. We wondered why she tucked her hand behind her back when she saw the pencil and pad in the dining room.That’swhy.”

I struggle to speak around my rage.

As if getting the words out has helped him regain his sense of calm, Cian stops struggling to get free and turns first to Rune, then to me. He’s still pissed, but he’s in better control of himself. “She said he didn’t want her to have calluses.”

Rune turns to stare at the closed office door.

She could have lost more than her ability to draw. She could have lost the ability to use her hand at all.

Because of a fuckingcallus.

“Ky?” Rune’s voice is gentle.

“Yep?”

“Start planning the best way of putting that man in a shallow grave.”

“On it.” I was on it days ago. Time to start putting the pieces together.

Chapter35

Everleigh

“Your friend looked pissed before he walked out of here, Ever,” Della says as we sit on the edge of the bed.

She hasn’t mentioned my… well, my near panic attack, and I’m hoping she doesn’t.

Bad enough it happened in front of Cian. But Della too? I don’t want my little sister to be walking on eggshells around me, terrified I’ll fall apart at the slightest thing. The sooner we can all forget it, the better.

I hadn’t expected Cian’s calmness as he kissed my forehead, telling me he’d be right back. On the surface, he’d seemed calm.
