“It wasn’t hard to work out where you’d gone,” Lawrence says. “Even easier to follow that sister of yours right to the Ashes’ back door and set a trap for you.”

I struggle to get up, not wanting to be in his lap when I’m so close to my heat. His scent—as hated as the man himself—will soon make me burn.

His arms tighten around me, and his nostrils flare. “Since you’re as good as used goods, and you seem incapable of giving me the heir I require, I’ve decided I no longer want you.”

Hope unfurls in my belly. “Then let me go.”

He tuts. “Give up what’s mine? Give up what my father has paid so much for with nothing in return? No.”

I bite my lip, relieved he didn’t learn about the birth control pills I stole from a beta servant. My relief is short-lived. What if it wasn’t luck that my first heat didn’t result in a pregnancy, or even the stolen birth control pills?

“You had Anna Jackson feed me suppressants,” I say, watching his response closely. “Maybe that’s the reason for the lack of an heir.”

He shrugs, unconcerned. “Then we’ll have to make the best of the situation. You can go to an alpha who has no need of an heir, and I’ll find an omega who can give me what I want.”

I stare at him, horrified. “I might never be able to have children because of what you and Anna did. And that’s all you have to say?”

Again, he shrugs. “All the better for your next alpha.”

The sharp sound of my palm hitting his cheek rings out. I must be as stunned as he is that I would dare do it. I even think I imagined it. But my palm stings, the apple of Lawrence’s cheek has a reddish glow, and the beta servant has her mouth hanging open, so maybe she’s the most shocked one of all.

My shock fades sooner than the servant and even Lawrence. I glare at him. “You bastard.”

His expression is glacial. “It’s becoming quite clear that my father paid far too much for you.”

My hand flies at his face.

He catches my wrist and leans close, speaking in a harsh whisper, “You will go to an alpha who doesn’t want a child. When your sister goes back to Pack Ashe, they will kill her, since they seem to have taken a liking to you.”

Della.

I twist in his arms, lunging for the door. I’ll probably kill myself by throwing myself out, but I have to get to Della because he’s right. The Ashes didn’t trust Della to begin with. If they find that torn bit of uniform and me gone, theywillblame Della, and they will kill her.

“Stop.” Lawrence’s order lashes me.

I struggle against the compulsion to follow his order as my will drains away.

I fail.

Because Lawrence is my alpha, and no omega can resist their alpha’s order for long.

I slump in his arms.

“You will sit still. You will not fight me anymore,” he bites out.

I settle into passivity, and as my eyes fill with tears, I think of Della, of how much I want to save her. Kylian, Cian, and Rune will believe she was responsible for this.

And they will kill her.

If Pack Ashe have proved one thing to me over these last few days, it’s that they will do anything to protect me.

Chapter41

Kylian

We stand around the desk in the office. None of us can sit down for this. Everleigh is gone. Taken. And on the desk in front of us is a scrap of blue uniform that tells us exactly who took her.

Della Jackson, Everleigh’s sister.
