She shakes her head and gives me a faint smile. “You’ve been sad, lovesick, and missing the men you love. I’ve been thinking of what I lost instead of thinking of what you need.”

Mom hadn’t believed me when I told her that Rune, Cian, and Kylian didn’t just save me from Lawrence. They set me free, asking for nothing in return.

All this time, she’s been waiting for the other shoe to drop, for them to turn up, reveal their hidden dark side, and lock us both up. I know because I’ve caught her nervous glances at the front door when she hasn’t realized I was watching her.

That day will never come because Cian, Rune, and Kylian aren’t like that.

She studies me. “Because you love them, don’t you? Love them so much you would be with them if you weren’t here with me?”

I don’t have an answer for her. Or I guess I do. If I were to tell her, it would hurt her, and I don’t want to do that. So I say nothing.

“And Della? You’ve been missing her as well, haven’t you?” she asks.

I bite the inside of my cheek, think of Della, and try not to cry because Idomiss her.

She studies me for a little longer and then reaches for my cell phone.

“Mom?” I ask, frowning. “What are you doing?”

“I think it’s time I spoke to someone, Everleigh. I’m free, but I’m still acting as if I’m living in that clinic. So I need to move on, and I don’t think I can do that on my own. I’m going to make an appointment with that doctor, and then we’re going to invite Della over for dinner.” She nods firmly as if she’s decided everything. “You grew up together, you love her as a sister, and that makes you sisters. It’s time I accepted that.”

I draw her into a hug. “Thanks, Mom.”

“And we’ll talk about what we plan to do about those alphas of yours,” she says, squeezing me.

I pull away, eyes widening in surprise. “What do you mean?”

“They’re your alphas, Everleigh, and you are their omega.” She smiles at me. “I think it’s time we reunited you. Don’t you?”

Chapter63

Cian

It’s been two days since we made our announcement that we were shutting down Ashe Investments. We’ve spent much of that time watching over Everleigh. Or we’ve been bouncing between meetings with our attorneys as well as checking on progress at the first Ever Safe downtown location. In that order.

Everleigh has been and always will be our first priority.

To celebrate the first Ever Safe omega clinic opening soon, Rune decided we needed to throw a party for it.

That party is tonight.

We all hope Della got ahold of Everleigh in time to let her know about the press conference we gave. For her. Out of anyone in the city, we needed her to see it and know going forward, she would always have a safe place to ride out her heat.

All omegas in the city will.

Ever Safe will never have any affiliation with the Omega Institute or the Council. They had decades to get things right, plenty of time to do what they should have been doing. And they didn’t.

Rune was the one who suggested we throw the party, though I doubt he’s looking forward to it, given the way he’s already yanking at his tie. The city needs to know that this is our new focus, and reporters love an excuse to party. So they’ll report on Ever Safe, and hopefully more omegas in the city will hear what we’re trying to do and take a chance on us.

Not all the wealthy families will be attending the party. Most—or at least the alpha heads of those families—are neck deep in legal battles.

While no omegas have stepped forward claiming abuse in those free heat clinics, a number of beta staff have been turning up dead. Not our doing. Kylian believes some alphas are looking to tie up loose ends to avoid identification.

They’ll fail.

With an award-winning investigative reporter sniffing out more corruption, and Pack Lucas’ security company hard at work behind the scenes, no one is getting away with this.

Kylian pushes the front door open and steps inside as Rune and I are heading to the den for a drink before the party. Dressed in black jeans and a faded gray T-shirt, he’s the only one of us still yet to get ready, having spent the last few hours watching over Everleigh. We’ve been taking the lead on surveillance, with Pack Lucas filling in for us when meetings to wind down our business have meant we all needed to see our attorneys.
