Rune nods as he lifts his glass to his mouth.

We wouldn’t have agreed to attend Lawrence’s party if we hadn’t been getting sick of it. We’d known we’d be dealing with pushy mothers, clinging omegas, and silently disapproving wealthy families who come from old money looking down at us. And yet, we’re the city’s most eligible bachelors. There are only so many attractive, wealthy alphas looking to claim an omega in the city.

But we’d accepted an invitation to the Wentworth ball because we knew there would be omegas there, and we were desperate.

Hitting Pulse for sex scratches the itch for intimacy when it gets too much, but it’s not enough. Hasn’t been for years.

Just like our business isn’t feeling like it’s enough. We’ve proved everything we needed and wanted to prove. Now what? What do we do with all the money we have accumulated?

What’s next?

“I want an omega who is ours, and we are hers. I’m tired of settling.” Rune takes the words right out of my mind.

One sniff. That’s all it would take. One sniff and we would know which omega was ours. We just have to find her for that to happen.

“So we give Everleigh a safe place to hide out, and when she’s safely away, we widen the search for our omega,” I say. “Maybe try other cities. Or even countries.”

“No more balls,” Rune declares. “I’ve had fucking enough of those.”

Raising my glass in a toast, I nod. “I’ll drink to that.”

“No more balls,” Cian agrees. “It’s time we found our omega and brought her home.”

Chapter8

Everleigh

Sweat has dampened the hair on the back of my neck by the time I’ve finished wrestling one of the side tables in front of the bedroom door.

I eye it critically and then spend the next couple of minutes fighting with it some more.

Needing to test it, I twist the door handle. When it hits the top of the bedside table, preventing it from going down all the way, I let out a sigh of relief.

Perfect. No one can get in.

I recall Rune’s powerful shoulders.

Maybehecould get in. But if he tried to force the door open, I’d hear the handle hit the wood, and it would give me plenty of time—I hope—to get to a window.

Despite my terror that they’d brought me to a room that had locks on both the windows and doors, the door swung open easily. It was the first thing I checked after they’d left me alone. Then, I’d rushed to the window and quickly confirmed it had a latch that opened, again easily.

Kneeling on the soft boucle window seat, I’d spotted a pool directly below my window. With it being the middle of the night, I thought I could make out some greenery in the distance.

And walls. Maybe even higher than the hedge in Lawrence’s garden.

With my failure to scale Lawrence’s garden hedge, the odds of me getting away in a hurry would be slim to none. Getting out of this bedroom is one thing. Getting off their property would be another matter entirely.

But for now, at least, I don’t need to go anywhere.

My muscles are quivering from exertion and my skin is sticky with sweat. Kylian’s spiced whiskey and bergamot scent still clings to his coat. With it now gaping open, it doesn’t quite cover up the pervasive stench of Lawrence’s black cherry, rum, and pepper alpha pheromones.

Maybe other omegas like the way he smells. I did at first. But that was before he made himself my captor.

Now I hate it.

Time to do something about it.

After grabbing the small white tube of antiseptic ointment from the top of the pile of clothes Rune brought for me, I head for the closed double doors.
