I know she did. We paid for her lessonsandher car.

“Several. And I took her out myself. Never again.” Cian gets to his feet, pulling his cell phone from his pocket. “I have homework.”

As I get up, I’m thinking of the bruise on Everleigh’s jaw and the man who put it there. “I’ll be doing some homework of my own.”

Cian and Rune halt, eyeing me warily.

I swing away. “I’m not planning on killing the man.”

Yet.

Before I started wearing suits and ties and being invited to fancy balls, I was a dirt-poor boy from a tiny rural town in New Mexico. Between being that boy and being the man I am now, I learned how to kill. And I learned how to do it well.

An alpha can give up their omega by unregistering their bond in the Omega Institute. That’s the only way. Everleigh would always have the claiming bite he gave her. But she would legally no longer be registered as Lawrence’s omega.

If Lawrence won’t give Everleigh up, we’ll have to convince him otherwise.

Or make him.

Chapter14

Everleigh

Asoft knock on the door makes me blink my eyes open to take in the empty white plate inches from my nose.

I inhaled my breakfast in seconds. I bit my tongue a couple of times, but even that didn’t stop me. Each bite had been glorious. Salty bacon, sweet pancake, and savory sausage. The eggs had been cold. Who am I kidding? Everything had been cold, yet I’d eaten it with my fingers, carefully licking each one clean.

I hadn’t cared how disgusting it must be to eat a cold breakfast on a closet floor with my fingers, practically in the dark. For the first time in what felt like forever, I’d been satisfied.

I’d curled up into a ball like a kitten with a full belly, telling myself I was only going to rest my eyes for a minute.

From the dim light drifting in from under the door, it’s been more than a minute. My belly no longer hurts, so I must have finished digesting my mammoth breakfast.

Thump.

Someone is at the door. But who? And more importantly, after what Rune said about this room being omega territory, will they enter?

I grab the plate and climb to my feet, stepping out of my closet and pushing the door closed behind me. Someone had knocked on the door before. But that sounded like a kick. Why would someone be kicking the door?

“Yeah?” I call out.

“It’s Hali. The guys said you needed a few things, and I just got back from the store,” she replies.

I eye the door. “They didn’t need to do that. I’m fine in”—my eyes take in the crumpled T-shirt and the even more crumpled boxers—“this.”

But are you? Soon, you’re going to be leaving, and other than the ripped dress you still need to pick up off the bathroom floor, you have nothing to wear.

I might not like relying on alphas to dress and feed me, but I can’t ignore the fact that I need clothes.

“Too late,” Hali calls cheerfully through the door. “The alphas were insistent. Open up. I might even agree to a little gossip session about them if you want.”

“Hali!” Rune yells up the stairs, making me jump. Since he sounds more annoyed than pissed, I let myself relax.

“Joking!” she calls back but adds in a whisper, “Open up. I know all their juicy secrets.”

“Don’t tell herallour secrets.” Kylian sighs, revealing she didn’t do nearly a good enough job of keeping her voice down.

She tempts me to smile, or maybe it’s the resigned responses from the alphas that do that. They sound like big brothers hushing their tenacious younger sister, with no hope she’ll actually listen to them. It’s not a side I was expecting to see from Rune, Kylian, or Cian, and it makes me more curious about them than I was already.
