Liquid slides down the side of my neck a split second before Rune steps toward me. “You’re—”

“Don’t touch me.” I have my back flush to the hedge, my heart lodged in my throat before I knew I was going to move. The hand I hold toward them is shaking as my chest heaves, and Iknowthere’s no way these three alphas didn’t just witness my overreaction.

But all I can process right now is that I ran from Lawrence, these alphas followed, and they might not hesitate to do much worse to me than Lawrence ever did.

They followed you deep into Lawrence’s garden, and no one knows where you are, Everleigh.

I press my back harder against the hedge, ignoring the vines jabbing me through the thin silk of my dress.

Rune lifts a paw-like hand to gesture at my right jaw. “You’re bleeding. That’s all I wanted to say.”

I swipe a shaking hand over the blood on my jaw and neck, nodding my thanks as there’s too much panic coating my tongue to speak. There’s not a lot of blood, just enough that I must have scratched my face on the vines.

The three alphas study me with a new intensity. And they’re still not moving.

Just fucking go.I mentally scream at them.

Rune returns his hand to his side. “We’re not here to hurt you, cher.”

I nod again.

Sure, whatever.

“We can help you,” Cian assures me, finally lifting his gaze from my jaw.

Help me right into the next gilded cage after I’ve escaped from the first? No, thanks.

“I don’t need help,” I say. It’s not entirely true. I still have a hedge behind me that I need to find some way of scaling because my way isn’t working.

“Everleigh…” Kylian has lost his sexy come-to-bed smile.

Why?

You know why, Everleigh. They must be thinking of how to take advantage of a lone omega ripe for the taking.

“We’re not here to hurt you,” Kylian soothes. “You have nothing to fear from us.”

“I know that,” I lie.

His eyes—alltheir eyes—settle on my still shaking hand I’m holding between us.

I tuck my arm behind my back. “Please leave me alone.”

Rune gives me another long look and straightens.

I flinch.

Rune halts, lifts both hands in the universal sign of peace, and backs up.Slowly. The others do likewise. “We’ll go.”

They’re turning when a familiar—and hated—voice rises from the house.

My name floats in the wind.

“Everleigh? Has anyone seen my omega?”

Lawrence.

Time just ran out.
