He kisses me and then presses his nose to my throat, inhaling with a deep, husky groan as his arms tighten around me.

“Kylian?”

He lifts his head. “Everleigh.”

But I don’t immediately respond. This isn’t the first time I’ve had an alpha in this house sniffing me, and I can only think of one reason why one would.

An impossible reason.

“Everleigh?” he repeats.

I watch him closely as I ask, “Do I smell good to you?”

The corners of his eyes crease with a hint of amusement. “Why do you want to know?”

I study him some more. “I’m trying to work out if the impossible has happened and you, Cian, and Rune are my scent-matched mates.”

His expression doesn’t change. “And if the impossiblehadhappened, would you stay and be our omega?”

Would I permanently stay with three alphas when one alpha terrified me so badly I swore never to be with another again?

Would I stay, knowing the hell Lawrence would unleash on Pack Ashe if he knew I was here?

And the answer? I don’t know. At least, not yet.

I hesitate for so long that Kylian flashes me an easy grin and rises from the pool. “Come on. Let’s get you back to omega territory. It’s getting cold.”

It isn’t until I’m in my shower, hot water streaming over me, that I realize I dodged his question, but he also dodged mine.

Chapter30

Rune

The next day, I gather everyone back in the den—including Everleigh. It’s important that she knows we’re doing everything we can to learn what’s going on in the city, that she feels a part of the solution.

“So what else do we know?” I ask.

“I’ve found nothing new on Della,” Cian says, glancing at Everleigh. “The last place I could track her was her cleaning job. After that… nothing. But she’s away from Anna Jackson and she’s away from the Wentworths, which means she’s safer than if she were with them.”

Everleigh smiles faintly at him. “That’s okay. You did what you could. It’s enough to know she’s alive. Somewhere.”

Her sad smile hints that it’s not a truth as easy to accept as she’d like us to believe.

I glance at the sheaf of papers in my hands. “And I’ve learned that there are more free clinics in the city than I realized. I’ve found twenty so far, and I doubt that’s all of them. The Council doesn’t require free clinics to register with them, so most don’t.”

“They should,” Kylian growls. “How does the Omega Institute expect to look out for the omegas in the city if they don’t even know how many clinics there are? Or how many omegas are using them?”

“They’re bureaucrats,” Everleigh says softly, distracted.

I cock my head, curious.

“It’s something Lawrence would say.” Everleigh blinks and focuses on me. “They like things done a certain way, Ts crossed and Is dotted. I doubt any free clinic in the city does things the way they like. In fact, they probably hope those clinics do things so badly that the unbonded omegas will turn to the Institute looking for a better sort of clinic.”

“But I’ll bet they know about all the paid ones,” Cian mutters.

“And you can bet your ass this isn’t happening in any of the clinics affiliated with the Omega Institute,” Kylian adds.

We all silently agree. No alpha would want to get caught preying on an omega from a wealthy family.
